First U.S. d3ath from H5N1 avian flu reported in Louisiana but public health risk remains low.

Louisiana health officials have confirmed the first U.S. d3ath linked to highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1).

The patient, a man over 65 years old with underlying medical conditions, passed away after being hospitalized with the virus. Authorities report that the man contracted H5N1 after exposure to a combination of a non-commercial backyard flock and wild birds.

The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) has conducted a thorough investigation but found no additional cases or evidence of person-to-person transmission. This remains the only human case of H5N1 in the state and the nation.

LDH has reassured the public that the overall risk remains low for the general population, though those who work with birds, poultry, or have direct exposure to livestock may be at higher risk. . Last month, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that the bird flu virus had undergone mutations within the Louisiana patient.

According to the CDC, genetic analysis indicated that these mutations could enhance the virus’s ability to bind to receptors in the upper airways of humans. “The changes observed were likely generated by replication of this virus in the patient with advanced disease rather than primarily transmitted at the time of infection,” stated the CDC, reports the Express US.

In a statement, the department expressed its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, and confirmed that no further updates will be provided in respect to patient confidentiality.

Across the US, the virus has been responsible for sporadic, predominantly mild illnesses in humans, with the majority of infections occurring among individuals working on dairy or poultry farms.

This year, there have been 65 cases of bird flu in humans, with 39 linked to dairy herds and 23 associated with poultry farms and culling operations. In two instances – one adult in Missouri and a child in California – health officials are yet to determine the infection source.

The case in Louisiana occurred weeks after Canadian officials reported a teenager in British Columbia being hospitalized with a severe bird flu case. In both situations, the illnesses were caused by a strain of the virus found in wild birds, not cattle, according to officials.
