Have I Got News for You star and BBC comedian Matt Forde has shared a cancer update after doctors found a tumour on his spine. The star, who has appeared on shows like Mock the Week and 8 Out of 10 Cats, was diagnosed with chordoma, a rare type of bone cancer, after developing “terrible nerve pain” in his left buttock back in 2023.
At the time, he said: “I couldn’t move a fraction of a millimetre without effectively being paralysed. I knew something was really wrong […] My main concern was if it was going to shorten my life. I was prepared to pay any price to stay here.” Matt underwent a 13-hour surgery to remove the tumour, and was fitted with a colostomy bag and a stoma which he will have for life.

Now, almost three years down the line, the star has shared an emotional cancer update, telling fans on X: “Had some good news yesterday. My latest MRI scan was clear. That’s 2 years, 9 months cancer free.
“I don’t want to minimise how difficult it was at the start, or how hard the surgery and recovery were to endure.
“But if you’re diagnosed with cancer it’s not necessarily the end of the world. I realise I’m lucky that I caught it when I did and that it was operable.

“I paid a price for it, losing bladder, bowl [sic] and sexual function. However, in time those things have come to feel very small. What was once the single biggest issue in my life is something I sometimes forget happened.

“If you’ve been diagnosed recently, there can be a way through it. And life on the other side of treatment/surgery isn’t always as terrible as you fear it’s going to be. In fact, it can be better.”
Matt told the Sunday Post back in 2023: “I’m living with changes to my body that I think are quite manageable and relatively small. But nevertheless, you don’t know that until you’ve lived it. Once you start to get on with it, you realise that, actually, we’re an adaptable species.”
