Although Steve Guttenberg attempted to caution them, drivers who have left their cars unattended may discover that they are a little worse off when they go back.

The “Police Academy” star begged his fellow Angelenos who might abandon their cars in the traffic bottlenecks around the Palisades Fire to leave the keys inside. Otherwise, clogged highways could hinder firemen.

“What’s happening is people take their keys with them as if they’re in a parking lot. This is not a parking lot. We really need people to move their cars,” he told KTLA Tuesday afternoon. “If you leave your car behind, leave the key in there so a guy like me can move your car so that these fire trucks can get up there.”

However, a number of drivers disregarded that advise, and authorities deployed a huge bulldozer to move stopped cars on Palisades Drive to the side of the road so that emergency vehicles could pass.

Residents flee ‘life-threatening’ Palisades wildfire as wind gains strength

As a potentially “life-threatening, destructive” windstorm struck Southern California on Tuesday, firefighters rushed to contain a rapidly spreading wildfire in the hillsides of Los Angeles, which are home to several celebrities. The fire was visible for miles, and the roads were congested with cars as residents attempted to evacuate.

Forecasters warned the worst may be yet to come with the windstorm predicted to last for days, producing isolated gusts that could top 100 mph (160 kph) in mountains and foothills.

Already the winds were toppling trees, creating dangerous surf and bringing extreme wildfire risk to areas that haven’t seen substantial rain in months.

Fire crews were battling a handful of small blazes in the Los Angeles area, including in the foothills of the Pacific Palisades area in western Los Angeles where residents were ordered to evacuate. The Palisades Fire swiftly consumed more than 200 acres (81 hectares) of dry brush and sent up a huge plume of smoke visible across the city. Residents in Venice Beach, some 6 miles (10 kilometers) away, reported seeing the flames.

An Associated Press journalist saw a roof and chimney of one home in flames and another residence where the walls were burning. The neighborhood that borders Malibu about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of downtown LA includes hillside streets of tightly-packed homes along winding roads nestled against the Santa Monica Mountains and stretches down to beaches along the Pacific Ocean.

Palisades wildfire engulfs 300 acres

The brush fire that began Tuesday at 11 a.m. near Pacific Palisades, California, has quickly spread to 300 acres.

The Los Angeles neighborhood’s residents are being ordered to leave right away. “Evacuate now from the area of Palisades Area. Those not in the evacuation area should shelter in place. Evacuation order for Palisades Fire,” the Los Angeles Fire Department said on X.

A map showing the required evacuation area has been released by the Los Angeles Fire Department. Evacuees are being told to head west on Sunset to southbound PCH and south along Palisades Dr.

California’s wildfire situation is “near worst case scenario” for locals, according to meteorologist Paul Deano. According to him, the fire is spreading toward neighborhoods due to gusts of up to 55 mph, endangering additional homes and human lives.

Strong Santa Ana winds and low humidity are the main causes of this occurrence, which increases the risk of wildfires. “It’s a near worst-case scenario for #PacificPalisades with 46-55 mph winds pushing a brush fire into multiple neighborhoods,” Paul Deanno, a meteorologist for KCBS and KCAL, two Los Angeles CBS stations, posted on X.

Due to the bush fire and extremely high winds, President Joe Biden has decided to cancel his trip to the Eastern Coachella Valley in California.
