HEARTBREAKING: Charlotte Hawkins Remembers Late Co-Star With Touching Tribute on Funeral Day
Presenter Charlotte Hawkins has paid tribute to her late co-star on the day of his funeral. Charlotte posted a photograph of an order of service from John Stapleton’s funeral, and wrote a touching caption about the veteran broadcaster. John sadly passed away on September 21st at the age of 79. His agent revealed that his Parkinson’s had been “complicated by pneumonia” and that he d!ed peacefully in hospital. He left behind a son, Nick.
Following the news of his d3ath, Charlotte shared an emotional statement online in which she wrote: “So sad to hear John Stapleton – our ‘Stapes’ has d!ed. He was such a brilliant broadcaster and I loved working with him on GMB.”

Charlotte continued on to say that John was “a genuinely lovely man”, adding: “It was good to see him when he came in just a few months ago to talk about his Parkinson’s diagnosis. He’ll be much missed.”
On Thursday 2nd, Charlotte shared a picture of an order of service from John’s funeral. The front reads: “In loving memory of John Stapleton. 24th February 1946-21st September 2025, age 79 years.” Charlotte captioned the post: “Remembering our Stapes today, and also in memory of Lynn.”
Lynn Wood, a Scottish television presenter and journalist, was married to John from 1977 until her d3ath in 2020. The pair presented Watchdog together, and following her d3ath, John said his wife had a “burning desire to help people” and make a difference. He told the Mail Online: “She was unstoppable. I remember standing outside the hospital in glorious sunshine just after she’d d!ed and it all seeming surreal. It was just such a shock.”
John’s son, Nick, reflected on his father’s d3ath with an emotional social media post. He said: “Dad had got very, very unwell. He wasn’t happy living his life as it was with Parkinson’s, that’s the truth. I made (and then deleted) a video about how hard he was finding it on Friday. It’s a very personal and difficult thing.”
Nick said that he dad wanted to leave “on his terms, without suffering”, adding: “I’m sad for me and my wife, who now have to live on without either of them, but I’m happy for him.” Nick continued: “He was just a very loving, unbelievably generous man. You won’t meet anyone with a bad word to say about him. And you can’t do much better than that. We spoke pretty much every day. He was genuinely one of my best friends as well as my dad. Lise and I are always going to miss them both terribly.”
Tributes to John also poured in from former colleagues and fellow presenters. Nicky Campbell wrote online: “I feel so sad. I worked with John Stapleton on Central Weekend Live for many years. He was a good friend, a kind, wise and very funny man and he was a broadcasting giant. Effortless, relaxed and incisive. A steel hand in a velvet glove. My condolences to all who loved him. There are many. Rest in peace my friend.”
This Morning’s Ben Shephard said: “Devastated to hear the news about our brilliant friend + colleague John Stapleton. A few of us old brekkie gang had lunch just a few weeks ago. It was so so special, even more so now we lost him. John was everything you’ve read and more. All my thoughts with Nick + his family.”
Meanwhile, ITV put out a statement praising John’s career that “spanned five decades”. It wrote: “John Stapleton was one of ITV’s most trusted and respected news journalists and a much loved face of breakfast television.
“We are saddened to hear of his passing and we send our love and very deepest sympathies to his family and friends, as well as his many ITV colleagues who will always remember him fondly.”
