Kansas City may have just hit an unexpected roadblock in its offseason strategy. With their left tackle situation still unresolved, the Chiefs could be forced to abandon one of Andy Reid’s long-standing draft principles: avoiding offensive players in the first round.
For years, the Chiefs have prioritized selecting defensive talent in the first round under Reid’s leadership. But after allowing six sacks in Super Bowl LVIII, protecting Patrick Mahomes has become a pressing concern. The team entered the offseason determined to secure a solid left tackle, but a new challenge has emerged-the NFL’s updated guidelines now require offensive tackles to have a minimum arm length of 34 inches.

This requirement has drastically limited Kansas City’s options, as many of the top prospects in the 2024 draft class fall short of that measurement. The Chiefs have consistently adhered to this arm-length standard, as seen in their past selections of Lucas Niang, Wanya Morris, and Darrian Kinnard. Even undrafted free agent additions have met this criterion.
Will Reid finally draft an offensive player in the first round?
If the Chiefs refuse to compromise on their arm-length requirement, they face two difficult choices: reach for a tackle who fits their mold but lacks first-round talent, or break Reid’s tradition and invest in an offensive player early in the draft.
Kansas City’s last first-round offensive pick was running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire in 2020, a move that didn’t pan out as expected. However, the current situation is vastly different-this isn’t about adding a luxury player, it’s about ensuring Mahomes stays upright.

Andy Reid has built a dynasty in Kansas City, winning three Super Bowls and cementing the Chiefs as perennial contenders. While his coaching résumé is already historic, he remains focused on the present rather than chasing records.
