Sky News halted for a breaking update after calls for King Charles to cancel his state visit to the US at the end of April to mark 250 years of American independence. The channel paused to announce that Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey has called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to cancel Charles’ scheduled visit in April. Reporter Amanda Akass gave an update from outside of Downing Street as she said it was “no surprise” that the call was pushed, because Davey has “always been exceedingly critical of Donald ๐๐ณ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฑ.”
Akass referenced Davey’s decision to “boycott” the last ๐๐ณ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฑstate visit after avoiding the banquet he was invited to at Windsor Castle. She reiterated that Davey has often called on the government to “stand up to Donald ๐๐ณ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฑย and end their alliance on the so called ‘special relationship'”.

The reporter stated that the government are currently taking more of a “Liberal Democrat approach” by not going ahead with what the US want, but she stated they have decided to “go a step further”. Davey claimed a state visit from the King would be seen as a “diplomatic coup for President ๐๐ณ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฑand should not be given to someone who insults and damages our country”.
She stated that there will be people advising Keir Starmer not to “reward Donald ๐๐ณ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฑfor the way he’s been talking about the UK”, but noted that cancelling the state visit would also “add oil to the flames”. However, she noted that Starmer is likely keen to smooth things over and get things back to normal.
It comes as a Washington source told GB News that the visit was already planned to be a short three-day operation, but it was being worked on before the US’ recent conflict.

They told the publication: “The feeling from British officials is that it might be best to take a rain check until things have quietened down later this year, though the White House is still open to the April date as it would prove a welcome PR boost for the president at a time of heightened scrutiny over Iran.”
The King’s visit to the US isn’t the only royal trip planned for this year, with Prince William expected to visit for the World Cup, which starts on June 16; it’s likely he could be attending for England’s first game against Croatia, which will take place in Dallas on June 17.
