Camilla “hated the idea of being queen” and had a disagreement with her husband King Charles, a new book has claimed.
When Charles, 76, became king in September 2022, Camilla became queen consort. The palace later confirmed that her title would become Queen Camilla following King Charles’ coronation in 2023.
But, according to a new book by royal author Tom Quinn, Camilla, 77, was once reluctant over the title of queen.

What Queen Camilla really thought of queen title amid ‘disagreement’ with King Charles
In an extract from his upcoming book Yes Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants, published in The Times, Quinn claims he spoke to royal staff who shared details on an alleged encounter between Camilla and Charles.
He wrote: “One member of staff told me that at one point, Queen Camilla hated the idea of being queen and would regularly say to Charles: ‘Can’t we get away from all this protocol? It’s all [bleep].’”
Charles, who married Camilla in 2005, reportedly replied: “You’re doing it [becoming queen] for me, darling.”

Queen Elizabeth II’s ‘sincere wish’ for Camilla
Following Queen Elizabeth II’s death in September 2022, her eldest son Charles became king. This meant Camilla’s title also changed.
Before her death, the late queen had said it was her “wish” for Camilla to be known as queen consort when her son took the throne.
Queen Camilla hated the idea of being queen.
On the eve of her marking 70 years on the throne in February 2022, Queen Elizabeth II said: “When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes king, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me.
“It is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as queen consort as she continues her own loyal service.”
Following Charles and Camilla’s coronation in 2023, the palace confirmed her title as Queen Camilla.

How Camilla has supported King Charles during cancer battle
As well as her loyal service to the monarchy, Camilla has also been a loyal support to her husband. In 2024, the king faced one of his toughest years yet after his cancer diagnosis.
Following a procedure for an enlarged prostate, the palace announced in February 2024 that the king had cancer.
He continues treatment this year, and Camilla has supported him throughout.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told GB News in October 2024: “Queen Camilla’s been such a splendid support. He seems to be doing extremely well. He’s done so remarkably well.”
