Experts claim Meghan Markle is losing sight of her relatability factor after dripping in gold and diamonds at a Kevin Costner charity event in the United States. For years, the Duchess of Sussex has championed herself as approachable and down to earth, coming from a humble background, but experts are now questioning her tactics.

After she appeared on Sunday at Mr Costner’s One805LIVE! event, the Daily Mail reported that Meghan wore a Cartier Tank Française watch, a $7000 (£5230) solid-gold Cartier Love bracelet, a $5000 (£3740) Jennifer Meyer mini bezel tennis bracelet and her $160,000 (£120,000) engagement ring.

The Duchess of Sussex also wore a £2,300 midnight blue Caroline Herrera collared halterneck dress with tortoiseshell buttons and a waist-cinching sash on stage.

Ryan McCormick, Managing Partner at Goldman McCormick PR, told the Daily Mail, Meghan has to be “fully committed” to connect to everyday people.

He explained: “Wearing that kind of expensive jewelry communicates, ‘I am in the upper class’. So we have two conflicting messages here, and that’s one of the reasons why it could be challenging for some members of the public to emotionally connect with her.”

McCormick said the eye-watering total price tag of Meghan’s weekend jewelry was the equivalent of “multiple times the average annual salary of most people.”

Meghan previously linked her expensive pieces on her ShopMy store (a platform where users pocket affiliate cash by recommending products) following her premiere of With Love, Meghan but that has since been removed from her Instagram biography.

Speaking of her audience, Kinsey Schofield also told the outlet: “Meghan and her team may believe her target audience is the classic royal watcher, an older and more affluent demographic.

“But that is a mistake, because loyal royal watchers tend to see Harry and Meghan as disloyal and destructive.

“Her natural audience is younger people, especially Gen Z and Millennials in the US and UK. Why she thinks a 20-year-old would want to buy overpriced fruit spread is beyond me.”

McCormick added it is unclear who Meghan is trying to target as her audience currently. He explained: “I would imagine she’s trying to reach everyone.”

Building on her brand, Meghan Markle will host a Christmas special of her show, With Love, Meghan in December.
