Meghan Markle’s estranged dad Thomas’ life now in ‘£500-a-month’ flat in the Philippines

Thomas can “enjoy a quieter, friendlier existence”

Thomas Markle, dad of Prince Harry’s wife Meghan Markle, is believed to be living in South East Asia in a search for a “quieter” life among kinder people.

According to reports, the 80-year-old made the move across the world to the Philippines in recent months, and is being cared for by his son Thomas Markle Jr.

Furthermore, the father and son are said to be living in a £500-a-month high-rise flat on the island of Cebu, having previously stayed there in a three-star hotel.

What is Meghan Markle’s dad doing now?

Thomas Sr told the MailOnline in January how he was familiar with the region.

“I travelled in that part of the world when I was a younger man. The people are so kind and welcoming, and they are respectful to older people,” he reportedly said.

Thomas went on: “It is a place of culture and beauty. At 80 it is time to go somewhere where the people are lovely. And I can enjoy a quieter, friendlier existence.”

Furthermore, he is said to have added at the time: “I’m not running away. I am going in search of a more positive life. Every day I see something about Meghan. I wish her no ill will. My dream is that one day I could bring my whole family together, like a ‘normal’ family.”

Now, the Mirror has published photographs of both father and son – believed to be writing a tell-all book – said to show them near their new home.

Thomas Markle and son ‘finding their feet’ after move abroad

However, Thomas Markle is said to be struggling with mobility problems, and has had two heart attacks and a stroke in recent years. Those issues are said to be exacerbated further by the extreme heat.

And Thomas is also said to have been spotted making use of a walking stick on the densely-populated island’s uneven roads and paths.

A source claimed to the Mirror: “There are only two types of weather in Cebu. Hot and humid, and hot and humid and raining. It’s brutal even for men half his age, but it’s still sad to see him looking as though he’s struggling.”

The source added: “Thomas and his son only recently moved into the property and they are still finding their feet in Cebu after the big move abroad. But they’re here together and are firmly supporting each other.”

For the last decade before his big move Thomas lived in Rosarito, Mexico. His beachside bungalow was only 250 miles away from his daughter’s family base in California.

But they are believed to be estranged ever since he pulled out of walking her down the aisle for her May 2018 wedding at Windsor Castle upon advice from doctors.

His new home is said to be yards from a busy seven-lane main road. But the block of flats Thomas Sr and Thomas Jr now reside in is still considered desirable on the small island, which has  a population of more than three million.
