Inside Jamie Laing and Spencer Matthews’ bitter rivalry – as friendship torn apart…

THEY once had the biggest bromance on reality TV, starting when they were just 15.

Spencer Matthews and Jamie Laing, now both 36,  shared their highs and lows on Made In Chelsea – winning over a legion of fans.

Their success as a duo led to a number of money-spinning ventures including a hugely successful award-winning podcast.

But fast forward a few years and the pair are no longer friends.

The divide between them was never more obvious than last week when Jamie took part in an epic marathon challenge that saw him running 150 miles over five days – just months after Spencer completed his own running feat for charity.

Jamie – who is now a Radio 1 star – was supported by not only the nation, but also his celebrity pals during the excruciating trial.

Spencer however was nowhere to be seen and, after speculation from fans, posted a very simple and somewhat blunt message of support.

It was in stark contrast to the post shared by Jamie when Spencer embarked on his own challenge – running  30 marathons in 30 days across the Jordanian desert.

Spencer wrote: “Great display of determination and resilience. Congratulations on a phenomenal fundraise for such an admirable cause.”

Jamie raised an incredible £2m, while Spencer made just over £500k for his cause.

Tension between the pair was hinted at just a few months before the challenge, when Jamie’s good mate Jack Whitehall appeared on his podcast and made a series of comments regarding their competitive relationship.

Jack told Jamie he would never be able to complete something like Spencer had and joked about how furious Spencer would be if Jamie did better than him.

He said: “It would be the end of the friendship if you just came out tomorrow and go, ‘I’m going to do 31 in the desert’ although you would probably keel over after the first.”

While he said it as a joke, the comment is said to be very close to the truth of their relationship now.

And only months later Jamie DID announce his own running challenge – did Jack’s words spur him on?

Our insider said: “It’s not gone unnoticed that shortly after Jack was winding him up that Jamie decided to take on Spencer- and with the backing on Radio 1, he managed to turn it into a huge spectacle and success.”

Interestingly, when we quizzed Jamie about if Spencer had been helping him train or if he had turned to him for advice, Jamie was evasive.

He diverted the question and revealed he had been chatting to Russell Cook, Britain’s self-styled Hardest Geezer, instead.

Spencer was the best man at Jamie’s second wedding
This wasn’t the start of slyness between them, but it has left fans wondering if they will ever be able to get back on track?

Our insider continued: “The first signs of trouble between the pair were the mix up over Jamie’s wedding.

“It was a huge oversight and Spencer really struggled to recover from it, it felt like betrayal.”

Back in in 2023, Spencer openly said how ‘p***ed’ off he was about what happened and his wife Vogue admitted she had never seen him so upset.

Spencer missed Jamie’s London wedding and was on holiday in Portugal at the time.

He explained what happened on the podcast he did with Vogue at the time, saying:  “I’m being hammered for ‘snubbing’ my best friend’s wedding to go on holiday, and then posting about my holiday. I’m not here to b***h about my best friend but there’s been some serious miscommunication from him.

“I just want to set the record straight, more than anything. I’m not here to whinge. I was not invited to this part of Jamie’s wedding, and neither was Vogue.”

Jamie later addressed what happened, saying:  “I f***ed up. We had our wedding, our civil ceremony in the UK. It was a hectic process.

“Amongst the hectic-ness of getting people there and things like that, I thought Spencer and Vogue were away.

“Spencer got upset – which is fair enough. So I sent Vogue a message hoping to get a bit of support and then she replied, ‘To be honest Jamie, it’s not good.’ And I was like “f***.”

The men tried to put what happened behind them but last year they decided to suddenly pull the plug on their podcast.

The pair had launched 6 Degrees from Jamie and Spencer in 2020, which saw them try to track down celebrities in six calls or less.

The news of the podcast ending blindsided fans who felt it came out of the blue and with little explanation.

It was reported that Vogue was the one who pushed Spencer to quit their joint venture.

An insider said: “Vogue has been concerned about Spencer’s friendship with Jamie. She saw how upset he was when he was snubbed from the wedding and she felt it wasn’t healthy for her husband.”

But could Vogue’s dislike of Jamie be about more than that? Was she so put out by the first snub that she refused to attend the second bash?

The final nail in the coffin came just two months after the London wedding fiasco when Spencer was accused of ‘hooking up’ with Lottie Moss at Jamie’s wedding in Spain, which Vogue did not attend.

The reality TV star, who previously admitted he quit booze for the sake of his marriage, attended the bash alone as Vogue claimed she had messed up her diary and had a work commitment in Dublin.

The claims about Spencer and Kate Moss’ little sister went viral, with speculation rife about what had really happened during the wild wedding party.

Lottie was forced to speak out about what actually had happened and denied anything had gone on, telling us: “Spencer’s a great guy.

“We partied together but there was nothing more to it.”

Spencer later went on to quit the podcast he did with wife Vogue and has been focusing more and more on his own ventures.

The source explained: “Spencer is really moving away from celebrity stuff – he is much more concerned with ‘human potential’.

“Jamie is now a huge star on Radio 1, they are very much on different paths, despite having so much in common on the surface.”

And as Jamie crossed the finish line last week, he was hailed a hero by the public – the perfect anecdote to toxic masculinity and Andrew Tate thanks to showing his vulnerability throughout.

But Spencer was nowhere to be seen – the once alpha male of Chelsea has been surpassed by Jamie, who has gone from being his cheeky sidekick to a household name.

The source added: “It doesn’t look like they will cross again any time soon.”
