Kiki Shepard dies: Beloved TV host dies suddenly after tragic heart attack

A well-known TV star has died aged 74 after a massive heart attack.

A cherished actress and television host has tragically passed away, as confirmed by her representatives. Kiki Shepard, the long-standing co-host of Showtime at the Apollo, has died at the age of 74. She graced the programme from 1987 to 2002, working alongside Steve Harvey and helping to spotlight emerging talent at the iconic Harlem venue. She also made appearances on TV shows such as A Different World, Baywatch, NYPD Blue and Grey’s Anatomy.

Showtime at the Apollo showcased live performances from both established and rising musical artists, earning her the title ‘Apollo Queen of Fashion,’ according to the Mirror. TMZ reports that Kiki – born Chiquita Renee Shepard – suffered a heart attack in Los Angeles on Monday, leading to her sudden death, as confirmed by her representative.

Kiki previously collaborated with Sinbad and Mo’Nique, as well as Mark Curry, Rudy Rush and Rick Aviles. She later took to the Broadway stage, participating in productions like Bubbling Brown Sugar, Reggae, Your Arms Too Short to Box With God and Porgy and Bess.

Her career kicked off in the early 1970s as a professional dancer, performing globally, including stints with the D.C. Repertory Dance Company. Her film credits include A Rage in Harlem, Miss Evers’ Boys, Dolls of Voodoo and Blackjack Christmas.

Kiki was born in Tyler, Texas, in July 1951, and attended Emmett Scott High School before advancing to Howard University. Following the announcement of her death, fans took to social media to pay tribute to her.

 

One posted on X: “What a legend. May her soul rest in peace,” whilst another remarked: ‘Rest in peace, Kiki Shepard. A true icon of Showtime at the Apollo-she will be deeply missed.
