To make the present all the sweeter, it also had a touching link to Louis’ late grandmother, Princess Diana.

The Duke of Sussex reportedly once purchased a very expensive, yet heartfelt, gift for his young nephew Louis.

The late Princess Diana apparently had a passion for collecting the first editions of classic books.

When buying Prince Louis – who celebrated his seventh birthday on April 23 – a christening gift a few years back, Harry was reportedly keen to keep this tradition alive.

According to reports, Harry brought Louis a first edition copy of A.A Milne’s Winnie the Pooh. The iconic children’s book was first published back in 1926.

Prince Harry ‘bought £8,000 book’ for Louis

In its first publication, only 30,000 copies of the book were made. This means that any that are around today are very rare indeed.

It’s believed that the copy Harry bought was valued at £8,000.

Harry had the brilliant idea of starting a little library of first editions for Louis, Charlotte and George to enjoy as they get older.

However, initially, the duke was reportedly going to go for a different book entirely. According to reports, Harry was eyeing up a copy of Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass, worth £24,000, before he settled on Winnie the Pooh.

“One of Harry’s happiest childhood memories was being read a bedtime story by his mother,” a source told The Sun at the time.

“She loved all the old classics, and Harry had the brilliant idea of starting a little library of first editions for Louis, Charlotte and George to enjoy as they get older.”

William and Kate would ‘never allow’ Louis to feel like ‘spare’ Harry

Harry’s previously expressed concern Charlotte and Louis may feel like “spares” within the firm. Charlotte and Louis are third and fourth in line to the throne, and are unlikely to ever be crowned.

Speaking to the Telegraph in 2023, Harry said: “And though William and I have talked about it once or twice, and he has made it very clear to me that his kids are not my responsibility, I still feel a responsibility knowing that out of those three children, at least one will end up like me, the spare. And that hurts, that worries me.”

However, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams has argued that William and Kate would “never allow” their youngest children to ever feel like spares.

“In the days, especially before primogeniture was abolished, the idea of ‘an heir and a spare’ meant the succession was supposedly safe. Harry resented being ‘the spare’ as his memoir made clear,” he told Royal Insider.

“William and Catherine would never allow Louis to feel that way.”
