Bill Belichick thinks the NFL should consider renaming the Lombardi Trophy after the most decorated player in league history.

The Lombardi Trophy, presented annually to the Super Bowl-winning team, was named after legendary Green Bay Packers head coach Vince Lombardi. The Pro Football Hall of Famer led the Packers to five NFL championships and victories in the first two Super Bowl games.

The Super Bowl trophy was renamed to the Lombardi Trophy after the Packers icon tragically died of cancer at the age of 57 in 1970. The trophy has retained that name since, but Bill Belichick believes the NFL should consider changing it.

Speaking on the latest episode of the “Let’s Go!” podcast with Jim Gray, Peter King and Maxx Crosby, Bill Belichick threw out a fascinating suggestion for the NFL to name the Super Bowl trophy after Tom Brady.

“Maybe they should name it the ‘Brady Trophy.’ He won seven of them,” Belichick said.

Belichick stated that it’s the players, not the coaches, who win the games. The new UNC head coach credited players like Tom Brady, Lawrence Taylor, Carl Banks, Tedy Bruschi, Mike Vrabel and Adam Vinatieri for executing the plays that won championships while he was a coach for the New England Patriots and New York Giants.

Brady’s seven Super Bowl rings (six with the Pats, one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) are the most ever for a single player. Belichick won two with the Giants as their defensive coordinator and six as HC of the Patriots.

Bill Belichick Begins New Journey At Chapel Hill

Surprisingly, no NFL team hired Belichick last year when he parted ways with the New England Patriots. Belichick took up multiple media gigs for the 2024 season before agreeing to a five-year contract to take over as HC of the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Belichick has never coached at the NCAA level, having been employed by an NFL team every year from 1975 to 2023. The 72-year-old is in the process of recruiting new players to Chapel Hill with GM Michael Lombardi.
