Patrick Mahomes reveals why he responded so unusually to Chiefs’ Super Bowl embarrassment

Patrick Mahomes could not wield his magic to lead the Kansas City Chiefs to victory in Super Bowl LIX; rather, the Philadelphia Eagles eased to a 40-22 win in New Orleans, winning a championship game that was barely competitive.
Mahomes was understandably saddeded at the defeat, as it cost the Chiefs a shot at NFL history as the first team ever to secure a Super Bowl three-peat. When the quarterback was seen next in a public setting, something had obviously changed…and fans now know why.

For the balance of his NFL career, Mahomes has been known for his trademark “fauxhawk” hairstyle, which is trimmed along the sides of his face to show off his curls. But after the Super Bowl, Mahomes ditched the fauxhawk for a cleaner, cropped cut — and according to the quarterback’s barber, this new haircut was a “compromise”.
“When he asked for a change, he basically was like, ‘Just cut me all off,'” DeJuan Bonds told Us Weekly. “I was like, ‘No, no, no. We’re not just going to cut it all off,’ we’re actually going to collab on this and go a little bit at a time, take it a little bit down. We kind of came to a common ground.”

Far from a response to the embarrassment doled out in New Orleans, Bonds confirmed that Mahomes had long been considering a change to his hairstyle — an idea that dated to the birth of his daughter Sterling, who recently celebrated her fourth birthday.

“He had mentioned during that time that entering fatherhood, he needed to go ahead and change up his hairstyle and didn’t want to be wearing a Mohawk, but we toyed with cutting it off a couple of times, but we were both superstitious and decided that now wasn’t the time,” Bonds said.
It remains to be seen how long Mahomes will keep this fresh cut, as fans have gotten so used to seeing him with a more-extreme look. But as he enters his 30s, Mahomes is walking into a new phase in his life and might soon be known as a “short-haired assassin”.
