Michelle Keegan on sexist double standards over pressure to have a baby: “Nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors”.k

Michelle Keegan’s family stopped asking when she’d have a baby after constant questions ‘affected her so much’

Michelle Keegan managed to stop her family from asking when she was going to have a baby after feeling “constantly frustrated” by people quizzing her on the subject. The star recently announced the news she was having her first child with Mark Wright, and spoke about the issue previously.

Michelle, who married Mark in 2015, felt fed up with the prying and highlighted how women tend to get treated differently over the topic.

Michelle Keegan and Mark, both 37, announced they were pregnant with their first child on Sunday, (December 29).

The Coronation Street star has been married to the TOWIE alumni for nine years.

She shared a photo of her cradling her baby bump on a beach, with Mark walking towards her. The duo were dressed in white with the sun low in the sky behind them.

Michelle captioned the Instagram photo: “2025 is going to be a special one for us…”, with the baby, white heart and star emojis.

Fans rushed to the comments to congratulate the pair, but some declared it was ‘about time’, which was pointed out to be invasive considering they haven’t opened up about their journey to conceive.

Others wrote ‘finally’ and someone else penned they ‘didn’t think’ it would happen but they were ‘happy’ for the couple.

It seemed to add to the pressure the celebrity pair have received over having a baby since their nuptials, and it’s a topic Michelle Keegan herself has opened up about.

Michelle was ‘frustrated’ over being asked the same question

What really upset Michelle is that Mark wasn’t asked the same question when it came up. At the heart of it is a kind of sexist double standard, she said at the time.

Speaking to You magazine in 2021, she explained it wasn’t anyone else’s business.

Michelle said: “I’m used to people asking me but it’s no one else’s business. Nobody else knows what goes on behind closed doors. I think that’s the reason that question affects me so much – it’s very private!

“Mark is asked about it occasionally but I’m asked every single time.”

However, she knew that the intentions behind asking were good.

People don’t mean any harm by it, but they know what the answer’s going to be

The Fool Me Once actress also told Cosmopolitan in a very honest interview the year before that it bothered her.

Michelle said: “A few years ago it didn’t bother me and I answered the question, but now I think, ‘I don’t need to answer that because nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors’.

“I know for a fact if Mark finished a job, nobody would ask him if he was going to have a baby. It’s not fair. It does make me feel frustrated.”

Negative rumours

Michelle clearly saw the interview as an opportunity to get a few things off her chest.

Another thing which irritated her was dealing with constant speculation that her marriage is on the rocks.

She explained her successful career was seen as a negative, and ‘not a positive’. The Our Girl star found it ‘hard’ when hurtful comments claimed her focusing on her work meant it was impacting her marriage to Mark. She slammed it as ‘ridiculous’.

“That can be quite difficult because it’s hard enough being away from home as it is without negative stories,” Michelle added.

But she said she is learning to take it in her stride.

“A few years ago it would have bothered me more than it does now,” she added.
