Patrick and Brittany Mahomes dealt another blow to their profile after Super Bowl embarrassment
It concerns a Mahomes family interest away from football

Patrick Mahomes endured one of the worst games of his brilliant NFL career in Super Bowl LIX, where his Kansas City Chiefs lost 40-22 to the Philadelphia Eagles at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The loss ended the Chiefs‘ dream of becoming the first NFL team in history to win the Super Bowl three times in a row — and has prompted debate over whether Travis Kelce, Mahomes‘ longtime running mate, will remain with the franchise in 2025.
Super Bowl night was an embarrassing one for Patrick and for his wife Brittany, who was forced to disable her comments on Instagram after an ill-timed post touted her outfit while the Chiefs were losing 24-0 at halftime. That tough evening became a tough week for the Mahomes family, who received some bad news about a sports business interest over the weekend.
Cleveland’s WNBA bid preferred to Kansas City
An arms race has taken shape in the WNBA amid the league’s surge in popularity. Several cities are jostling to receive expansion franchises — The W‘s newest team, the Golden State Valkyries, will begin play this season. Two more expansion franchises, in Toronto and Portland, also have been confirmed to begin competing in 2026.
It was revealed Sunday that Cleveland, Ohio is poised to receive the next expansion team, which would begin playing in 2028 out of the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, which is home to the NBA‘s Cleveland Cavaliers. Brittany and Patrick had joined a consortium that launched its own bid to bring the WNBA to Kansas City, but the league has passed them over…at least for now.

That said, expansion team-seeking groups in Detroit, Houston, and Miami all seem to have higher priority for the league right now as compared to Kansas City, which has never had a WNBA team and lost the NBA’s Kings to Sacramento in 1985.
After the league picks one or two more cities to expand the competition to 18 teams, it seems as if the next expansion cycle will not take place until the 2030s — when Mahomes will be in the latter stages of his NFL career. It remains to be seen whether Patrick and Brittany’s push to bring women’s professional basketball to their adopted hometown will ever be successful.
