Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may consider a move back to Canada if political tensions in the United States escalate, according to a royal commentator.
Speaking to Royal Insider, Richard Fitzwilliams suggested that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could seek refuge in Canada, where they initially settled after stepping back from royal duties in 2020.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ‘could return to Canada’
It comes after US President Donald Trump hit out at Harry, 40, over his admission about past drug use in his memoir Spare. The Duke of Sussex admitted he had previously taken marijuana, cocaine and psychedelic mushrooms.
Following the book release in 2023, there was much speculation over whether Prince Harry had made his past drug use clear on his US visa application. Past drug use may be considered grounds to deny a US visa application.
Trump said during an interview: “If he lied they’ll have to take appropriate action.”
This then sparked speculation over whether Harry could face deportation from the US.
“In the event of deportation, which he would, of course, fight in the courts, it is likely Harry and Meghan would return to Canada,” royal commentator Richard told us.
“They first sought refuge [there] after stepping down as senior working royals. They have, of course, a holiday home in Portugal.”

Meghan Markle ‘intensely disliked in Britain’
Richard highlighted the couple’s complex relationships on both sides of the Atlantic.
“Meghan is intensely disliked in Britain, and Harry, with the family rift very deep, returns solo, as we have seen,” he explained.
The royal commentator also criticised Harry’s public disclosures in his memoir Spare.
“His admission of taking drugs both in Spare and in the interviews promoting it was highly unwise,” Richard said.
In the event of deportation, which he would, of course, fight in the courts, it is likely Harry and Meghan would return to Canada.
“If the way he lost his virginity and penile frostbite made him a laughing stock, and his admission of the number of Taliban members he killed increased his security risk, his highlighting drug use could lead to potential embarrassments.”
The expert also pointed out the Sussexes’ rocky relationship with Donald Trump, saying there is “no love lost between” them.
Richard went on to note the irony if the Sussexes were to return to Canada.
He said: “It would certainly be ironic if the Sussexes were to return to the country they first sought refuge in. Unlikely as it is, it would mark the end of their American Dream if it happened.”
For now, Harry and Meghan remain based in California, but ongoing political and personal challenges could lead them to reassess their future.

Meghan Markle and Donald Trump’s ‘feud’
Meanwhile, Meghan Markle and Donald Trump have had a rocky relationship spanning years, beginning during Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.
While still starring in TV drama Suits, Meghan criticised Trump. In an interview, the former actress called him “misogynistic” and “divisive” and urged people not to vote for him.
In 2019, Trump, then on a state visit to the UK, spoke warmly of Meghan, calling her “very nice” and praising Prince Harry as a “terrific guy”.

Marrying Prince Harry
Meghan married into the royal family on May 19, 2018, when she and Prince Harry tied the knot at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
Just a few months after their wedding, Meghan and Harry announced they were expecting their first child. They welcomed Prince Archie on May 6, 2019.
Two years later on June 4, 2021, the couple welcomed a daughter named Princess Lilibet. She was named after the late Queen Elizabeth II – whose nickname was Lilibet.

“I wouldn’t protect him. He betrayed the queen,” he announced to Express US.
Now with Trump back in the White House, what could this mean for Harry and Meghan’s future in the US?
