Sarah Ferguson on being diagnosed with cancer twice

In June 2023, Sarah revealed that she’d been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Prince Andrew’s ex-wife underwent a single mastectomy, with doctors stating that her prognosis was “good”. She had reconstructive surgery following the mastectomy.

I don’t mind admitting that my mind went to some dark places, reflecting on my own mortality.

Whilst undergoing reconstructive surgery, it was discovered that one of her moles was cancerous.

In January 2024, Sarah announced that she’d been diagnosed with skin cancer.

“Clearly, another diagnosis so soon after treatment for breast cancer has been distressing, but the duchess remains in good spirits,” her spokesperson said in a statement.

Sarah Ferguson on ‘dark places’ following cancer diagnoses

During an interview with The Times recently, Sarah spoke about the impact her double cancer diagnoses had on her.

“It was hard. I’m generally a positive person but cancer is like a bomb going off in your life. One diagnosis is enough to deal with, but I had two in the space of a year. I don’t mind admitting that my mind went to some dark places, reflecting on my own mortality,” she said.

She then spoke about how she copes mentally with it all.

“I’ve used meditation and mindfulness to help stay positive and balanced,” she said.

She then said that her family were of “immense” support to her during the time.

They uploaded a picture of Sarah and Liz for their followers to see.

“We would like to dedicate this post to Liz,” the caption read.

“Liz was a loyal member of the Duchess of York’s household, and she sadly died of cancer late last year. Liz was a beautiful woman, inside and out, and is sorely missed by all of us who had the good fortune of sharing our lives with her.

“In memory of Liz, we have made a donation to St Vincent’s Curran Foundation, which is carrying out world-class research and providing innovative cancer treatment and care. Thank you Liz for bringing us so much joy. May you rest in peace.”
