Alex added: “One person who made a special appearance on the big night was Paddington Bear, and we must say congratulations to Paddington, because he picked up an amazing nine awards for his musical last night,” with Roman noting that it was “very impressive”.

Paddington The Musical dominated the WhatsOnStage Awards on Sunday night (March 8), winning nine prizes after its triumphant launch in the West End last year.

The show is based on Michael Bond’s original children’s books and the recent film adaptations. It quickly became a hit with theatre fans and received rave reviews from critics after its debut at the Savoy Theatre in November.

The musical’s nine awards are the most for a new production, and equal the joint record previously set by Miss Saigon and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Paddington’s wins included Best New Musical and Best Professional Debut for 17-year-old actor Timi Akinyosade, as well as prizes for its direction, costumes, make-up and sound.

Meanwhile, winners in the acting categories included Rachel Zegler, Jonathan Bailey, Amber Davies and Sir Stephen Fry.

Reflecting on the winners, Darius Thompson and Alex Wood of WhatsOnStage said: “The voters really did look after that Bear! Paddington’s record-setting awards haul has firmly cemented it as a fan-favourite new addition to the West End.”

Paddington Bear notably joined Queen Camilla for the final of the 500 Words competition last week, with the royal sharing a special message that left BBC viewers feeling emotional.
