Tonight’s Gogglebox saw the cast watching hit Netflix series Adolescence, and things got emotional as the cast were seen breaking down in tears.

The hit series, featuring Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper has become a phenomenon and has broken records across the country. It follows the story of the Miller family, whose world is turned upside down when their 13-year-old son Jamie is arrested on suspicion of murdering his female classmate. The unique story was told in a one-shot format, meaning there were no scenes or breaks in filming.

As well as the acting, Adolescence has been praised for exploring themes of misogyny, social media-fuelled bullying, and the rise of incel culture.

The cast of Gogglebox were seen watching the hit Netflix show, and Jenny and Lee were hooked straight away. The cast were seen reacting to the scene where Jamie was arrested for murder as Mary said: “How can a little chap like that murder anyone?” The cast then expressed their shock that the police had gone in all guns blazing.

“You’d be mortified if that was your child!” exclaimed Danielle and Daniella. Later on, Jamie was interviewed by the police as the cast exclaimed: “This is horrible!” Jenny was in shock during the scenes when he was asked about his love life as Mary said he’d been under the influence of Andrew Tate.

Finally, the cast were seen reacting to the moment the father and son watched the CCTV of the attack – with some of them not being able to look. “I just stopped breathing,” said an emotional Shirley, as Michael and Sally were seen breaking down in tears.

“The biggest issue is that the interview is raising the youth now and there are some vile characters,” said Baasit Siddiqui.

The show has already become the most watched TV series of the year, attracting a whopping 66 million views in its first two weeks alone. Adolescence’s huge numbers mean it has become the most successful limited series released in that timeframe ever – overtaking Fool Me Once, which starred Michelle Keegan.

Despite the success, the show won’t be up for any BAFTA’s this year due to being outside of the qualifying period which runs between January 1 and December 31, 2024. Fans will have to look out for next year’s awards ceremony to see if the show picks up any gongs.
