Scarlette Douglas, the former face of A Place in the Sun, says her reactions to seeing properties are always completely genuine. The television personality, who now collaborates with her brother Stuart Douglas, prides herself on being “very open and honest” when it comes to expressing her opinions on camera.

Scarlette, has been a guiding force on Channel 4’s Worst House on the Street, as well as contributing to George Clarke’s Flipping Fast and Love It or List It. She initially rose to fame on A Place in the Sun, where she helped British buyers in their quest for the perfect home overseas.

In 2022, Scarlette joined forces with her brother Stuart, an ex-footballer, to transform some of the most dilapidated properties on a street into desirable homes. Despite the challenges posed by these neglected houses, which are often in dire need of renovation, the duo has won over audiences with their candid first impressions.

Scarlette didn’t hold back her true feelings during one episode, openly stating “I just want to leave” upon encountering a property with significant issues like holes in the floor and a pervasive damp odour. Unlike some presenters who may choose to mask their genuine reactions, Scarlette and Stuart stand out for their forthright approach.

Scarlette opened about her and her co-host Stuart’s candid approach on their property show, saying: “There’s no faking it, we are honest. Stuart is more brutal than me but we are very open and honest. We don’t hide it. We say as is,” reports the Mirror.

She went on to describe one of their most surprising experiences on the show, recalling how they were once taken aback by a couple who had bought a kitchen before securing a house to put it in.

The presenter recounted the unforgettable encounter, saying: “Both mine and Stuart’s faces were just in shock. I was like ‘let me get this right, you brought the kitchen before you brought the house?’. We were stuttering. We were spluttering. We had no idea what to do at that moment because we’ve never had that before. Ever.”

Stuart teased an episode from their new series designed to help homeowners struggling to sell their properties. He said: “Our reactions are priceless because people honestly cannot see why [their properties aren’t selling] and some of the properties that we’ve seen you would not believe.”

Furthermore, he said that being forthright is part of their job, saying: “We have to be brutally honest as to why we feel that it’s not sold.”

Stuart conceded that their directness can sometimes lead to backlash from homeowners. The property expert said: “Sometimes you get a bit of a bit of kickback and a bit of animosity. They don’t believe what you say because it’s hard.

“It’s their house they love, it’s where they live. Sometimes when you critique somebody’s personal property, it can be hard to take. But we have to be honest. We have to be honest in what we think because it’s an industry that we know very well.”

Scarlette added: “If we’re not honest, we’re not going to be helping those that, in essence, need our help.”

The sibling duo’s on-screen presence mirrors their real-life partnership in the property business, where they’ve honed their dynamic over the years.

However, even the closest of siblings can experience rivalry and disagreements. Scarlette admitted: “I am normally telling Stuart off because he likes to mess around. Stu is the goofy one on set, so I am the one that has to say ‘come on lets focus’. But that’s what brings a lot of energy and fun to the sets.”

Stuart added: “I think because there’s two of us, technically it’s half the work, even though it’s still a lot of work. There are times when it gets to about 4pm in filming and I have forgotten anything we need to be talking about.”

Scarlette’s hunger pangs often coincide with this time, prompting Stuart to joke: “She’s hungry at that time.”
