Liam Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy wiped tears as she revealed why she left him days before his d3ath.

Kate, was with Liam in the days leading up to his devastating d3ath on October 16, 2024. However, just two days before Liam tragically fell to his d3ath aged 31 on October 16, falling from the balcony of his third floor hotel room, she left Argentina and returned to her home in Florida. He di3d after suffering multiple traumas leading to an “internal and external haemorrhage”.

In recent months, Kate has opted to keep a low profile having moved her belongings out of the property they shared in London and returned to her life in the States. In November, she was joined by Damian Hurley as they attended Liam’s funeral in Buckinghamshire – but didn’t arrive with his family.

Now, she has spoken in an in-depth interview with The Sun, as she burst into tears. Opening up about her decision to return to Florida days before his d3ath, she said: “I had a responsibility, we had a responsibility. We had our dog and obviously I never, ever thought this event would occur. It was a tragic accident and no, I never did think (he might di3 young). But, you know, we did have our own separate lives — this wasn’t the first time we have travelled separately.”

Since his d3ath, she has repeatedly been phoning Liam’s old phone number just to hear his voicemail greeting. She’s also vacated the property that they once rented in Florida and has returned to her hometown, New Jersey. Although she fell asleep listening to his music, this is no longer a reality for Kate who struggles to listen to his tunes.

While some of Liam’s friends discovered his d3ath on social media, Kate was told of the shattering news by one of Liam’s friends when she was at home with their dog, Nala as she sat scrolling through social media. Instantly reacting, she believed it was a cruel hoax but had a “bad feeling” that it would be true. In an instant, her mother got the first flight to Florida to be with Kate who had “blacked out”. In disbelief, she revealed she picked up her phone and called Liam, to try and speak to him. But one incident surrounding Liam’s d3ath remains a mystery – even to his ex-girlfriend. Just hours before he fell, Liam was seen smashing his laptop in the lobby of his hotel in a furious state of rage.

She admits she has no idea what caused her boyfriend to relapse. Liam had been open about his struggles over the years, including with alcohol. This is something that Kate had been supporting him through, as she “loved his soul”. Despite the musician turning to drink and drugs after she fled Argentina, she believes he had been in a “good headspace” when she left. Prior to his d3ath, she had texted Liam having had their Florida mansion decorated for Halloween – which he sadly never saw.

But Kate was dealt another blow just days later when the person who had helped her had gotten in contact to find out whether the Batman fan had liked what was waiting for him – not knowing he had di3d.

Kate later revealed that she fell in love with Liam when she was just 10. He was one fifth of the world’s biggest boyband and she was a fan – with posters plastered across her bedroom walls. Since his d3ath, she has spoken on social media of how the pair had planned to become engaged. On Instagram, she revealed that Liam had written her a secret note and had instructed her not to read it.

She said: “A few weeks ago, we sat outside on a beautiful evening manifesting our lives together. I keep your note close, even though you told me not to look at it. It said, ‘Me and Kate to marry within a year/engaged & together forever 444’. Liam, I know we’ll be together forever, but not in the way we had planned. You’ll always be with me. I’ve gained a guardian angel.”

She continued: “I will love you for the rest of my life and beyond, carrying our dreams and memories with me everywhere I go. Forever yours, Katelyn 444.” In numerology, 444 is an angel number that represents a powerful message of guidance, support, and love from angels watching over you.

But in the days leading up to Liam’s tragic fall, she revealed online that she had no option but to leave Argentina, where they were staying. Kate said: “I was so ready to leave. Love South America, but I hate staying in one place for too long and we were supposed to be there for five days, turned into two weeks and I was just like, ‘I need to go home.'” Liam remained in Argentina.

The couple had been holidaying in Argentina in the days leading up to Liam’s d3ath as he had to apply to renew his visa for America, where he was planning to live with the former waitress. Payne’s visa had expired due to his history of drug use and rehab stints, meaning he had to undergo medical examinations and drug tests before being given the all clear.

Liam and Kate met in a scenario straight out of a rom-com, when the then-ordinary waitress served the megastar at a bar in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2022. For Liam, the attraction was immediate, and he asked for her number straight away. However, their relationship almost didn’t take off. Kate gave Liam her phone number and forgot to add +1 to her area code, due to having an American number.
