Social media went crazy Wednesday afternoon over a rumor that the Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys were discussing a trade for star quarterback Dak Prescott.
Cleveland sports radio personality Bruce Drennan reported that the Browns and Cowboys were engaged in negotiations.
Drennan added that he had a reliable source in the organization and that Cleveland would send cornerback Greg Newsome II and draft compensation to Dallas in exchange for Prescott.
Whether it was real or not did not matter much to some on social media.
A graphic would even pop up showing what a Dak Prescott trade would look like.
It has Prescott heading to the Browns while the Dallas Cowboys would receive Deshaun Watson, cornerback Denzel Ward, and a 2025 3rd-round pick.

After Cleveland sports radio personality Bruce Drennan set off shockwaves, NFL Network’s Jane Slater reported that she was told by two sources that it was “fake news” and Prescott would “absolutely not” be heading to the Midwest.
Cleveland owns the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NFL draft, so they can draft their future quarterback if they choose that route.
Trading for Dak Prescott does not turn this team into a playoff or Super Bowl contender.
Dak Prescott Has A No-Trade Clause

There are multiple reasons why a trade for a 31-year-old Prescott isn’t feasible for the Browns.
Prescott signed a four-year contract extension worth $240 million prior to the 2024 season, and his current cap hit is $53 million, per Spotrac.
That would be tough for any team, but more notably for the Browns since they already have a $37 million cap hit on their books for quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Prescott played in only eight games before suffering a season-ending hamstring injury last season.
The biggest factor in him not being traded is that he has a no-trade clause.

Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb reportedly tried to bring in former Super Bowl MVP Cooper Kupp to bolster their offense but to no avail.
Following his release from the Los Angeles Rams, the 31-year-old Cooper Kupp decided to stay in the NFC West and signed a three-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks worth $45 million.
As it turns out, one of the Seahawks’ NFC rivals also pushed hard to land the 2021 Offensive Player of the Year before he put the pen to paper.
Speaking on the latest episode of his podcast, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Prescott and Lamb talked to Kupp and tried recruiting him to Dallas However, the Cowboys’ interest in Kupp faded once they learned his asking price:
“Last Thursday, the Cowboys reached out about Cooper Kupp and they were interested. Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, who I understand it, were on the phone with Cooper Kupp talking to him about the idea of coming to Dallas, and it was floated out there. And then the Cowboys heard the numbers, and they were at numbers that the Cowboys weren’t going to get to.”
The Cowboys have lacked a quality No. 2 receiver to complement CeeDee Lamb since they traded Pro Bowler Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns in the 2022 offseason. Michael Gallup failed to fill the void, as did 2023 trade acquisition Brandin Cooks and 2022 third-round pick Jalen Tolbert.

Though Cooper Kupp missed five games in 2024, he still finished with 67 catches for 710 yards and six touchdowns. In two postseason games, Kupp recorded six receptions for 90 yards.
Last year, Jerry Jones refused to sign star running back Derrick Henry despite publicly expressing his wish to come to Dallas. One year later, Jones passes on the opportunity to sign another big-named weapon. The more that stays the same.
Cooper Kupp Should Fit Well In Seattle

Injuries have prevented Kupp from coming close to the elite 2021 form that saw him lead the NFL in receptions (145), receiving yards (1,947) and receiving touchdowns (16). But he’s always a threat for 1,000 yards, and he should fit in nicely as the No. 2 receiver for Sam Darnold and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
