Coronation Street’s James Cartwright has landed a new role away from the ITV soap, fuelling the theory his character is doing to die next month.

Last month, a flashforward episode aired that allowed us to discover Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) will soon be questioned by the police over finding a dead body.

The possible murder victims were revealed in the instalment as well, and they are James’ character Theo Silverton, Jodie Ramsey (Olivia Frances-Brown), Maggie Driscoll (Pauline McLynn), Megan Walsh (Beth Nixon) and Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard).

A number of Weatherfield residents have reason to want these five people dead, but only one will end up facing their demise in April.

Theo Silverton has been abusing his boyfriend Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) for months on the cobbles, making him a very likely candidate for the murder. If Todd ends up telling someone about the abuse, it’s possible Theo could lose his life as a result of a Weatherfield resident attacking him in a state of rage for hurting their friend.

The possibility of James Cartwright departing the show in April has increased now, due to the fact the actor has a role in a new film.

He will feature in a comedy-horror called Bjorn of the Dead, which focuses on an ABBA tribute band battling zombies amid an apocalypse.

James will play Benny in the show and will also star alongside his father Jim Cartwright, who will play an Elder Tribute.

Could the discussion of a new role for James mean he has left Weatherfield behind?

This week in Coronation Street, Todd was stunned when Theo said they should end their relationship. After threatening his partner with a knife, Theo concluded they weren’t happy, and it would be best if they weren’t together.

‘This space will give Todd time to sit with where he is now and maybe get some perspective. Maybe it’ll create some space for those closer to him like Sarah, George and Summer to potentially influence him as well’, star Gareth Pierce said, discussing what happens next.

‘I think we might see some campaigning around him, and they’ll tread carefully in doing it, but maybe they’ll say that this is a good thing — of course not knowing the full misery of what’s been happening.

‘I think there will be a sense that might happen, but of course the space will also give Todd an opportunity to have some sense of loneliness. And again, I think that might be something at the beginning of this relationship that kept him there a bit longer. There was a sense that he maybe feared being left on the shelf, and I think that came back to haunt him a little bit.

Gareth noted: ‘What’s worth talking about as well is that people have seen parallels like this in relationships of their own. When you’re potentially out of the relationship, it can be one of the most dangerous times. I think there’s some real fear and potential danger there as well.’
