Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams believes the timing of the new book by Diana’s brother is not a coincidence.
Earl Spencer has been accused by a top royal commentator of launching a “brutal and unprovoked att@ck” on King Charles, deliberately timed to coincide with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to the UK. Diana, Princess of Wales’s brother waited just under 30 years after the tragic de@th of his sister to release allegations concerning the monarch’s past comments, a move royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams branded “quite extraordinary”.
Writing in his new biography, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, set to be published on Tuesday, Diana’s younger brother alleged that the then-Prince of Wales made disparaging remarks about Diana prior to her 1997 funeral, reportedly saying: “We’ll forget her soon enough.” Speaking exclusively to the Express, Mr Fitzwilliams warned that such explosive claims pose a real threat to the Royal Family’s public standing. “It is quite extraordinary that Earl Spencer would wait 29 years after his sister’s tragic de@th to launch a brutal and unprovoked att@ck on the King, claiming he made disparaging comments about Diana before her funeral,” he said.

“It’s these soundbites people – whether they remember her or are of a younger generation – remember, and ‘we’ll forget her soon enough’ is very damaging.”
Mr Fitzwilliams voiced a strong belief that the release of the biography was timed to align with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s recent activities.
“I am convinced Spencer arranged the launch of the biography to coincide with the Sussexes’ surprise move to the UK,” he stated, adding that the Earl’s animosity toward the King might stem from long-held remorse over his own actions during Diana’s life.
“The hatred he clearly feels for the King may also well be a product of the Earl’s guilty conscience,” Mr Fitzwilliams explained. “He never verified Martin Bashir’s forged bank statements before he introduced him to his sister, which led to the Panorama interview.”

The infamous November 1995 broadcast, watched by more than 20million UK viewers, featured the late Diana discussing her marital difficulties and mental health.
A 2021 independent inquiry led by Lord Dyson concluded that Mr Bashir breached BBC guidelines by using fabricated bank statements to deceive Earl Spencer, securing the initial introduction to Diana through her brother.
The nature of the siblings’ relationship prior to August 1997 remains a subject of debate. It fractured in 1993 after the Earl refused Diana’s request to live in a cottage on the family’s Althorp estate, citing concerns over media intrusion.
As noted by Mr Fitzwilliams, while Earl Spencer delivered a fiery eulogy at her 1997 funeral, condemning the Royal Family and paparazzi, sources close to the family maintain the two were barely on speaking terms at the time of her de@th.
“During much of the 1990s and, according to many, at the time of her de@th, the Earl and Diana were estranged,” Mr Fitzwilliams said.
Warning that further allegations may follow, the royal expert questioned the overall veracity of the claims, asking: “More explosive claims will undoubtedly surface, but how true are they?”
