Sky News came to an abrupt halt on Monday (17 August), as Russia issued a chilling warn!ng to the UK. “I’ve got some breaking news coming into us here at Sky. In the last few minutes, the Russian Embassy to the UK has published this statement,” Jonathan Samuels told viewers.
Sharing the statement’s contents, the journalist noted that there had been reports that the “Kyiv regime is using British drones to carry out strikes deep inside Russian territory,” leading to accusations that “London is deliberately opting for an escalation of the Ukraine crisis, while hypocritically professing a desire for peace.
“In doing so, the United Kingdom is acting as an accomplice and co-perpetrator of the bloody crimes and terrorist attacks committed by the Ukrainian neo-Nazis seeking to contain Russia and inflict maximum damage on it.”
“London’s action, the statement continues, will inevitably carry consequences for which it will have to answer,” Samuels said, reading Russia’s warn!ng that the “deeper” the UK becomes involved in the war, and the “greater” support it provides to Ukraine, the “higher the price it will pay”.
Following the Russian Embassy’s warn!ng, the UK has since issued a response. “Britain stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine and we are committed to providing the equipment Ukraine needs to defend itself against Putin’s illegal invasion,” the Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday (18 August).
“Russia should be in no doubt about the resolve of this Government to stand against Russian aggression, in Ukraine and against the UK and our allies.”
A news report that divided viewers, several have taken to X in response. Voicing concerns, one wrote: “The UK should not be getting so involved in this conflict. You expect Russia not to retaliate when they are being bombed effectively with the help of the UK. Do not underestimate Putin if he is backed into a corner. My view.”
“I have a feeling that the UK will get hit particularly hard due to the incredibly weak leadership (almost non-existent) and the civil strife currently happening…” remarked a second.

Meanwhile, others declared that the UK was right to support Ukraine. “Russia’s idle threats will not intimidate Britain nor stop us in supporting Ukraine from defending itself from an imperialist war of aggression by Russia,” tweeted a third. “Putin won’t strike the UK, he’s too scared of the consequences,” remarked a fourth.
Back in April, the Ministry of Defence confirmed that the UK would supply tens of thousands of drones and long-range strike devices to Kyiv. “We are committed to providing the equipment Ukraine needs to defend itself against Putin’s illegal invasion,” a spokesperson said at the time. “This includes over 150,000 drones this year, cutting-edge Stone Cloak devices that hinder Russian air defences and innovative low-cost cruise missiles.”
