Royal author Dickie Arbiter has weighed in on the Sussex drama, following King Charles’ guidance on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s “private citizens” status. Appearing on GB News, the journalist and ex-press secretary to the late Queen Elizabeth II slammed the couple and their team.
“Well, the rumble started when they arrived back in England without anybody knowing, and then, suddenly, the Lord Chamberlain issued a statement [on behalf of the King] last Monday, in which he refers to the couple as ‘private citizens,'” Arbiter told host Camilla Tominey on Sunday.
“They’ve made a big deal out of it, and their team are winding them up, telling them they’re not private citizens, they’re public figures,” he continued.
“That’s for the public to decide, not them. What the Lord Chamberlain’s letter was aiming to say was that they’re no longer members of the royal family, and in not being members of the royal family, they’re private citizens. End of.”

“Does this briefing w.a.r remind you a little bit of the w.a.r of the Waleses?” Camilla asked, considering that Arbiter was also Charles’s press secretary during his marriage to Princess Diana.
“It reminds me a little bit,” the author mused. “But, here we’ve got a letter coming out from the Lord Chamberlain, and they’re coming back with all sorts of rubbish, quite frankly.
“In terms of the Waleses, yes, there were friends speaking on behalf of both of them. Diana wasn’t too fussed about the friends speaking on her behalf, but Charles, when he was Prince of Wales, was concerned and told his friends to basically belt up, which they did.”
Arbiter’s comments come days after a source close to Prince Harry suggested that the letter issued on Charles’ behalf had led to Uganda’s withdrawal from the Invictus Games.

“Intended or unintended, this is clearly a consequence of the Lord Chamberlain’s guidance regarding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex that was rushed out without consultation on Monday,” a source told ITV. “Sadly, the only people who will suffer are the Invictus Games competitors.”
Uganda’s withdrawal from Invictus was confirmed on Wednesday by the President’s son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba. “In order not to be construed as being opposed to His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom, whom we deeply revere, Uganda hereby withdraws from the Invictus Games. We shall not participate in anything that does not have His Majesty’s approval,” the chief of defence said in a tweet.
