A couple who appeared on A Place in the Sun admitted they refused to sign the contract to purchase their new home after their seller broke a vital part of their terms and conditions. In the latest episode of A Place in the Sun: What Happened Next?, presenter Ben Hillman caught up with husband and wife Withney and Rose, four years after they first appeared on the Channel 4 programme.

In 2022, the couple began searching for a property in La Zenia, Spain, with a budget of £90,000, hoping to enjoy it with their two grown-up daughters. After visiting several properties, Withney and Rose settled on a two-bedroom apartment in Punta Prima, valued at £80,825.

The couple were told that the owners also wanted to sell their garage for an extra cost of £8,500 on top of the apartment’s asking price.

Their first offer of £81,250 was declined, with the owners wanting the couple to edge more towards the full asking price. Withney and Rose agreed and put in a final and maximum offer of £85,000, which was accepted.

Catching up with the couple years later, Withney explained they spent just over £100,000 for the apartment and the fees included. He added that they have since splashed €4,500 on the property, installing a brand new boiler and having all the wiring redone because it was so old.

When asked how they managed to get everything done correctly, Withney heaped praise on the agent who helped them purchase the home, describing her as a “friend” who has been “really good to us”.

The guest explained how helpful the agent had been, encouraging them to call whenever they needed anything.

Without her assistance, the purchase might not have gone through as Withney and Rose revealed they refused to sign the contract after learning their conditions regarding the garage had not been met.

He recalled: “Even when we were buying the place, one of the conditions was to have it cleared out because there was so much stuff in the garage. When we got there, there was still a hell of a lot of stuff in there. So we said we’re not going to sign because we don’t know how to get rid of all this stuff or what the potential costs could be.

“So she actually went and got a load of bags and cleared it all herself. I think she had about three car loads.”

Ben was stunned by what he was hearing, but acknowledged the agent went “over and above” to help out the buyers.
