ITV’s daytime schedule was thrown into chaos as the Good Morning Britain presenters and crew were forced to evacuate the studios as the channel cut to This Morning 20 minutes early. During the episode on Monday March 9 presenter Susanna Reid who was hosting with Ed Balls, told viewers that she could hear an alarm sounding in her ear. She asked producers asking producers whether those on-camera needed to do anything as the show then as she vowed to “plough on” as the show went to an ad break. However instead of returning as normal the channel began airing This Morning 20 minutes early.

Presenters Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard looked surprised to be thrust on so early. Cat was heard asking producers: “They’re not coming back or they are coming back?” as Ben asked: “What are we doing?” Assuring viewers that everyone was OK, they said an alarm had gone off, and that was why they were on air at 9.40am instead of the advertised 10am. They didn’t explain what had caused the fire alarm to activate but Ben quipped: “We are hopefully going to find 20 minutes of content.”

Helping to fill the gap regular guest Gyles Brandreth opened up on his birthday celebrations over the weekend and chef Clodagh Hagan showed a natural way to disinfect your chopping board.

One of their commentators, Camilla Tominey, wasn’t even in the studio yet, although Ben pointed out she technically wasn’t late, as they had started early

She made it by 10am pointing out the irony that the one day she couldn’t get to the studio early was the say they were asked to go on.

The change was so sudden that This Morning was still announced as coming up next during their first ad break just before their scheduled start time.

The emergency occured on the first day Good Morning Britain had it’s running time extended until 10am.

Although it usually ends at 9.30am and is followed by Lorraine they are filling the extra half hour this week as Lorraine is pulled to allow for coverage of Cheltenham Festival which will begin on Tuesday March 10.

As it stands the show is due to run until 10am every day this week with no updates indicating otherwise despite the emergency.

Loose Women has also beeen axed for the week as the annual racing event takes over screens.
