Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have broken their silence just days after reports revealed that the Sussexes are preparing to spend an extended period back in Britain — and the timing of their latest statement is already raising eyebrows.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex published a new statement on their official website under the striking headline “Service Beyond the Battlefield”, shifting the focus firmly onto Harry’s work with veterans and wounded service members.
The statement comes only two days after friends of the couple reportedly revealed details of their plans to return to Harry’s homeland.
Rather than addressing the growing questions surrounding their relationship with the Royal Family, Harry’s latest update highlights his continued work away from the Palace.
The Duke recently travelled to Washington D.C., where he met American veterans, caregivers and members of the military community. He was hosted by Sarah Verardo, CEO of The Independence Fund, a nonprofit organisation supporting veterans and their families.
Harry began his visit at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, one of the United States’ leading military hospitals.
According to the statement, the Duke was given an opportunity to see rehabilitation programmes and technologies designed to help wounded, injured and seriously ill service members regain independence.
Harry reportedly met doctors, researchers and hospital staff working in areas including biometrics, osseointegration and occupational therapy.
He was also shown the hospital’s in-house manufacturing facilities, where specialists can reportedly design and fit prosthetic devices for patients in remarkably short periods of time.
But it was Harry’s meetings with wounded service members and veterans that appeared to form the emotional centre of the visit.
The Duke met people from both the United States and Ukraine who were undergoing physical rehabilitation and heard about their experiences of recovery, treatment and the importance of camaraderie.
He also spoke with Walter Reed leadership about rehabilitation and the potential role organisations such as the Invictus Games can play in helping injured service personnel rebuild their confidence.
Yet the statement has landed at a particularly awkward moment.
Harry’s decision to highlight his military and charitable work comes as attention intensifies around his reported plans to spend considerably more time in Britain with Meghan and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
The move could place fresh pressure on an already fractured relationship with the Royal Family, particularly Prince William.
Harry has repeatedly insisted that his military connections and work with veterans remain deeply important to him. The Invictus Games, which he founded, has become one of the most recognisable parts of his public life since leaving royal duties.
