The Prime Minister has been forced to cut short his attendance at the European Political Community summit in Copenhagen after a deadly attack outside a synagogue in Manchester left two people d3ad and several others injured on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
According to Greater Manchester Police, a car was driven into members of the public near a synagogue in Crumpsall on Thursday morning before a man launched a kn!fe attack. Armed officers responded within minutes and sh0t the suspected offender. The force declared “Plato,” the national designation for a marauding terr0r attack, and confirmed that paramedics treated multiple victims at the scene.
Speaking before leaving Denmark, Keir Starmer described the attack as “absolutely shocking” and confirmed he would return to London immediately to chair an emergency Cobra meeting. He announced that additional police patrols would be deployed to synagogues across the country and emphasised that the government would do “everything possible to keep our Jewish community safe.
The incident has prompted widespread shock and condemnation. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said she was horrified, while Health Secretary Wes Streeting called the attack “deeply chilling.” Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch described it as “vile and disgusting,” accusing the government of failing to protect worshippers on the most sacred day of the year for the Jewish community.
The timing and nature of the attack have intensified political pressure on the Prime Minister, who had been in Copenhagen to discuss migration and Ukraine with European leaders. Critics argue that Starmer’s promises to strengthen national security and protect communities have been exposed as fragile, raising questions about the government’s ability to uphold its most fundamental duty.
