A celebrated Canadian actor who starred in the third season of Fargo, among dozens of other TV shows and theatre plays, has sadly d!ed, his son has announced. Night Heat star Scott Hylands passed away aged 83, it was announced.
Sharing the news on Instagram, his son wrote: “Husband, Father, Actor, Director, Writer, Storyteller, Friend, and lover of life. I am heartbroken to share the news that my dad Scott has passed away Wednesday night. Myself and my family are still trying to process this horrible loss. There simply are not enough words I can say about you right now. You are my forever hero and my best friend. Always and forever. I love you. Goodbye Dad. Xo.”

Born in 1943 in Alberta, Canada, Hylands was raised by his mother, Ruth, who worked as both a nurse and a mathematics teacher. His father, Walter, was killed in action during World War 2 in 1945.
Hylands initially stud!ed zoology at the University of British Columbia before switching to theatre arts, a decision that eventually led him to New York City to pursue an acting career.
After several years performing on stage, he made his screen debut in the 1969 film Daddy’s Gone A-Hunting.
He went on to appear in a number of films, including Operation Snafu, Fools, Slipstream, Earthquake, and Bittersweet Love, while also building a strong television career with roles in popular series such as Griff, Kung Fu, The Magician, Wonder Woman, Police Story, The Waltons, and Hart to Hart.
After returning to Canada in the 1980s, Hylands took on one of his most notable roles, starring as Detective Kevin “OB” O’Brien in the police drama Night Heat.
The series ran for four seasons between 1985 and 1989 and made television history as the first original Canadian drama to be broadcast simultaneously on an American network during its initial run. It also became the highest-rated Canadian-produced original series in the country at the time.
Following the show’s cancellation, Hylands continued to build a successful career on both sides of the border, appearing in a range of American and Canadian productions, including To Catch a Killer, NYPD Blue, Titanic, The X-Files, Stargate SG-1, V, and Supernatural.
In 2017, he appeared in the third season of Fargo, playing Ennis Stussy, the stepfather of Carrie Coon’s character, Department of Homeland Security agent Gloria Burgle. Hylands is survived by his wife, Veronica, and their children, Luke and Rebecca.
