Investigators believe beloved musician Glen Hansard lost control of his motorbike after it struck a soft roadside verge as he made his way home. Hansard shot to fame when he was cast in the 1991 musical comedy film The Commitments, and was the long-time frontman of acclaimed rock band The Frames. Sources have revealed to The Irish Mirror that Gardaí believe the 56-year-old sustained catastrophic injuries when his motorbike overturned after he lost control during the early hours of Wednesday morning.
“He did not collide with a tree or anything like that,” a source told the publication. “The belief is that the bike hit a soft verge on the road, and that made him lose control of the vehicle. It then flipped over.” Ireland was plunged into shock when news of the cherished musician and singer’s death emerged at around 9am on Wednesday, with specialist Gardaí now spearheading an investigation into the tragic accident.
The Garda team consists of experts within the force known as Forensic Collision Investigators, or FCIs. These extensively trained and experienced accident investigators are anticipated to spend several weeks undertaking a comprehensive examination, likely producing a forensic report spanning hundreds of pages once completed.
Sources have informed the Irish Mirror that Mr Hansard is believed to have lost control of his motorcycle while travelling home. The accident took place near Strawberry Beds in Lucan, west Dublin, at approximately 4.30am.
The Irish Mirror has discovered that Gardaí have confirmed Mr Hansard left a local pub – the Wren’s Nest – at its usual weekday closing time of 11.30pm.
Video footage emerged after his death showing Mr Hansard enjoying a session at the pub during the early part of the evening.
Nevertheless, with the accident taking place at around 4.30am, there is a four-hour window between his departure from the Wren’s Nest and when the collision occurred.

Gardaí are now attempting to establish his movements during those four hours, according to sources.
One avenue of investigation indicates he may have stopped at a hotel in the west Dublin area before planning to journey to his Celbridge home in Co Kildare. Officers are also anticipated to identify anyone who had interaction with him after his departure from the Wren’s Nest.
No criminal investigation has been initiated into Mr Hansard’s death, with focus directed on compiling documentation for the coroner and forthcoming inquest.
Gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward
