Chicago fans will have to wait for next season for the former star’s jersey to be raised in the rafters. Rest assured, that it will be an emotional night for the entire city to watch their native son getting the ultimate recognition in the city that raised him.
The Chicago Bulls selected Derrick Rose first overall in the 2008 NBA Draft. He played eight seasons with the team, and won the league MVP in his third season and became the youngest-ever MVP in NBA history at 22 years of age.
In the 406 games that Derrick Rose played for the Bulls, he averaged 19.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game. He also led the Bulls to the playoffs in four consecutive season and revived the Bulls culture since Michael Jordan’s retirement.
Derrick Rose’s timeless message tears up son PJ Rose
The Chicago Bulls decided to honor Derrick Rose with “Derrick Rose Night” at halftime during the game between the Bulls and the New York Knicks at United Center on Saturday. These are two teams that Rose played 11 of his 15 seasons with.
Amid the tears flowing in the arena, it was his son that Rose had the special message for; ‘be great not good.’
The former MVP gave a great anecdote about what it’s like to live in his house. Slacking is not allowed in Rose’s household. The former Bulls star said that not only he but even his children remind him to be great every day.
“A joke that we have in the house,” Rose said. “If they see me lacking on something, they say “dad you wanna be good or great?” And then make me remember, I am trying to be great.”
“You hear me? Great!” Rose addressed his son, tearing up PJ as he wiped tears.
Rose previously said that the primary reason behind his decision to hang his boots was to spend more time with his children. He remains one of the most respected stars in the NBA to this day. Despite his struggle with injury throughout his career, Rose never lost sight of the greatness that he chased day and night.
