On Wednesday morning, NFL insider Adam Schefter had to make a heartbreaking personal announcement.
Anyone who has had a dog and lost a member of the family knows how difficult it is when they make that heartbreaking transition to the afterlife.
Schefter and his family suffered the heartbreaking loss as the ESPN NFL insider posted an emotional tribute to their Benny.
Adam Schefter wrote in part: “This was a day we knew was coming since last February, and yet there still is an overwhelming sense of sadness.”
Schefter then stated they had planned to put him down as he had liver cancer that had spread, and the dog could barely stand anymore.
The poor dog also stopped eating.
The unfortunate would happen as the family woke up Wednesday morning to find out that Benny had died in his sleep.
Fans took to the comment section and sent their condolences to Adam Schefter:
“So sorry, Adam. My dog turns 13 this year, and I’m realizing how precious every day is. Thoughts and love sent to your family!” one fan said.
A second fan added: “Adam, I am so sorry for you. I know the feeling. I think it is easier that Benny is gone before the scheduled vet appt. I have sat through one of those, and it was the worst moment of my life. I hope you and your family can recover from the pain. I love this tribute that you wrote.”
“RIP, Benny- enjoy your trip over the Rainbow Bridge. Most of us have gone through this at some point in our lives, and it sucks. Had to put our little Maggy down a few years back due to kidney disease and i still miss her dearly,” a third fan commented.
“Sorry for your loss and rest easy Benny! Dogs are truly a gift and it looks like he lived a beautiful life,” a fourth X user added.
One final fan added: “I’m so sorry 4 your loss Adam Schefter. Losing a dog is never ever easy, it’s one of the things I hate feeling. I wish dogs would live longer like human do, but sadly they don’t. My family and I are sending prayers to you & your family…”
Will Adam Schefter Take Some Time Off?
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter is not one to post much about his personal life, but he changed that this week.
Just over one week into 2025, his family was hit with tragedy.
Schefter announced that his family’s beloved dog, Benny, passed away in his sleep. The dog was already in poor health as it had stopped eating and could barely stand due to liver cancer.
Despite his heartbreak, it does not appear that Schefter will be taking any time off.

This news came amid the ongoing wildfires ravaging the Los Angeles area. Kerr discovered that the Palisades fire tragically burned his family residence.
According to a text message shared by his mother, Ann, with close friends and family, the loss of the home has added to the emotional toll of the already dire situation. Mandatory orders forced Ann Kerr to evacuate, but she is currently safe with family and friends.
Kerr spent a significant part of his youth in Pacific Palisades. Before embarking on a 15-season NBA career, he thrived in the community. He also excelled on the basketball court at nearby Palisades High School. Along with Kerr, Kawhi Leonard, and Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick, they are also dealing with the repercussions of this natural disaster.
In light of the ongoing disaster, NBA spokesman Mike Bass confirmed that discussions are ongoing between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Charlotte Hornets regarding potential adjustments to their schedule. The two teams are scheduled to meet on Thursday evening, as Shams Charania of ESPN reported. Additionally, Lakers superstar LeBron James was one of several individuals who shared messages of support on social media for those impacted by the fires.
