The San Francisco 49ers could potentially make Brock Purdy the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history with a new contract, but another former first-round pick is ready to take Purdy’s spot as the team’s starting quarterback.
During an episode of Pro Football Talk Live, Mike Florio noted that Mac Jones is coming to the 49ers with the mindset that he can take the starting quarterback job from Purdy.
“I’ve heard enough from Mac Jones over the years, and I’ve seen enough. He’s not going to go in there and bow down to Brock Purdy,” Florio said.
“He’s going to go in there with the mindset of, ‘I can win this job. I was the 15th pick in the draft in 22, this guy was the last guy taken in 23. This guy is in the right place at the right time, running Kyle Shanahan’s offense.'”
Florio explained that if Jones can demonstrate a grasp of the offense after signing with the 49ers, the quarterback truly believes he has the talent to take over for Purdy as the starter.
NBC Sports Boston’s Michael Holley pushed back on the idea of Jones taking over the job from Purdy, noting that Jones’ track record suggests more negative results than positive ones.
“If you talk football with Mac Jones, you love it,” Holley said.

“He is an impressive football mind when he’s talking, but when he plays, it’s not pretty. He just does things that are head scratching and he will drive Kyle Shanahan crazy. He will make him crazy. He’s not going to beat out Brock Purdy. If he does beat out Purdy, it’ll be for a game or two and he’ll go right back in there.”
Jones was drafted by the New England Patriots in 2021, part of a draft class of quarterbacks that has struggled in the early part of their careers.
Jones joins Zach Wilson and Trey Lance as high draft picks that season who are now backups, showing just how quickly a player’s standing can change in the NFL.
Mac Jones will have another fresh start with the 49ers after his time with the Patriots and the Jacksonville Jaguars, but expecting him to take Purdy’s job feels like an overreaction.
