A wild trade idea involving San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy went viral on Friday, drawing mixed reactions from fans and analysts alike.
FS1’s Craig Carton suggested the 49ers trade Purdy and the No. 11 overall pick to the New York Giants in exchange for three first-round selections. His reasoning? San Francisco could then sign veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the 2025 season.
Carton’s proposal immediately became a hot topic across sports media, with many dismissing it as unrealistic. Purdy has established himself as the 49ers’ franchise quarterback, leading them to the Super Bowl last season and remaining productive even in a down year. Meanwhile, the Giants would be sacrificing significant draft capital for a quarterback, and they would also have to pay handsomely in an upcoming extension.
Why This Trade Won’t Happen

Despite the buzz, there’s little chance this deal will gain traction. The 49ers have made it clear they want Brock Purdy as their long-term quarterback, and they have the cap space to extend him. The 24-year-old threw for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 2023, proving he can lead an elite offense.
Even in a six-win 2024 campaign, he posted solid numbers with 3,864 passing yards and 20 touchdowns. Trading him for draft picks would set the team back rather than push them forward.
The Giants, on the other hand, aren’t in a position to make such a move. Committing three first-rounders to acquire Purdy while paying him upwards of $50-60 million per year would be a major risk. New York is still exploring its options, reportedly considering Russell Wilson or drafting Shedeur Sanders if Rodgers signs with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Carton’s trade idea may have made waves online, but it remains just that, a fun, off-season thought experiment. With San Francisco focused on securing Brock Purdy’s future and the Giants weighing their quarterback plans, this proposal will remain in social media debates rather than NFL reality.
