As Gardeners’ World returned on Friday night (31 July), viewers embarked on an emotional trip down memory lane. Paying tribute to the late Geoff Hamilton, who presented the series from 1979 to 1996, Adam Frost took the reins, honouring an old friend, mentor, and colleague.

Returning to Barnsdale Gardens, which Geoff cultivated on the show, Adam opened up about their sweet friendship, which began when he scored a job with the broadcaster. “I find it very hard to believe that we lost Geoff Hamilton 30 years ago,” said Adam. “He had such an influence on me as a gardener. I’m 21 years old, and I got a job at Barnsdale Gardens for the great man. If one person set a moral compass as to how I was going to garden for the rest of my life, it has to be Geoff.”

During the episode, Gardeners’ World revisited archival footage of Geoff, before Adam met with the TV star’s son, Nick, to share fond memories of him. Concluding his tribute, Adam told viewers that Geoff had “touched so many lives” and would continue to do so.

A moving episode, fans have since reacted to Adam’s tribute on social media. “That was a lovely tribute, Adam. #gardenersworld,” wrote one.

“Geoff Hamilton on #GardenersWorld made me the gardener I am today. I even remember making my own blue obelisk. I was so sad when we lost him. So happy to watch this tribute to him on tonight’s show. Thank you,” tweeted a second.
