Carrie Underwood is not a fan of Billy Eichner, so it seems.
Comedian and actor Billy Eichner appeared on the Bravo show Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen earlier this week, where a fan asked him about why Carrie had blocked him on Twitter a while back.
Eichner, who has a new movie premiering this Friday called Bros, which is the first gay romantic comedy from a major studio featuring an entirely LGBTQ principal cast, explained what happened, saying getting blocked was “a great honor” for him:
“Carrie Underwood blocked me on Twitter, yeah, which I consider a great honor.
It was one of the great thrills of my life, you know. Jesus follow me back on Twitter, I guess, I don’t know.”
Host Andy Cohen asked if Billy was tweeting “nasty shit” about Carrie, which would prompt her to block him, to which he responded:
“I think I was… Okay, there was there was a thing where she, during like the height of COVID, she posted, retweeted a speech by some Republican guy saying that kids shouldn’t have to wear masks in schools, right?
Kind of letting her political views be known for the first time.”
The tweet he’s referring to, which Carrie did “like” on Twitter but didn’t “retweet” or share any other way, was from The Daily Wire conservative commentator Matt Walsh, who had given a speech opposing a proposed mask mandate in schools last year.
And the tweet, which did go viral but has since been taken down, featured a video of Walsh’s speech to the Metro Nashville Public School board, along with the caption:
“Here is my speech to the Nashville School Board where I spoke out against the cruel and indefensible mask mandate for children.”
Carrie has two young sons, Isiah (7) and Jacob (3), and her husband Mike Fisher was very vocal about his feelings about the COVID restrictions and mask mandates during the time.
Carrie didn’t outright endorse anything or explicitly say she opposed the mandates, as she’s has always been pretty quiet about her personal political principles.
Many took the “like” as an endorsement of everything Matt said, though, as well as assuming what she thinks about every other political issue based on the fact that she liked this one tweet.
And because of social media being social media, Carrie came under major fire, with some fellow country stars sticking up for her and other celebrities condemning the fact that she liked the tweet.
At the time, Billy admitted he had made some public jokes about her that went viral on Twitter, which he assumes Carrie saw and obviously probably didn’t appreciate:
“And I guess I made some jokes about that that went viral on Twitter, and I guess she didn’t like that.”
There ya have it, folks.
