Viewers will remember Gary hastily departed earlier in the month to visit his mum, fleeing the drama caused by Lou Michaelis’ blackmail attempts.

Worry started to set in for Gary’s wife Maria Connor and stepson Liam when he didn’t come back or respond to their calls.

Friday’s episode brought a glimmer of hope as Maria got a text from Gary saying he was crashing with a pal and would be home soon – only for viewers to be left gobsmacked as it turns out Gary didn’t send the message, given he was out cold in hospital.

And over at the police station, Nina Lucas was a wreck, confessing to Roy Cropper post-midsummer party – where she dabbled in LSD – “I hurt someone, I’m sure of it and I have to find out who.”
