For more than 15 years, Pauley Perrette was a familiar face on TV every week. Playing Abby Sciuto, the smart and definitely unique forensic scientist on NCIS, she captured the hearts of tons of viewers with her signature dark look, her endless enthusiasm, and that special something that was all her own. But the person behind the pigtails and lab coat was dealing with a life that was far more intricate—and one that took a turn towards the shadows once the filming wrapped each day.
Abby Was Beloved. But Pauley Was Struggling.
Fans knew Abby Sciuto as the heart of NCIS, bringing comic relief and emotional depth to one of TV’s most watched crime dramas. Perrette portrayed her from the show’s first season in 2003 until 2018, appearing in over 350 episodes. But by the time she walked away, the story off-screen had become tangled in fear, anxiety, and silence.
Her exit from NCIS wasn’t just a career move. It was emotional, messy, and surrounded by concern. At the time, Pauley cited “multiple physical assaults” on set, and although she never directly named anyone, speculation exploded—especially around her working relationship with series star Mark Harmon.
A Dog Bite, Tensions, and a Divide on Set
The situation apparently began with an incident involving Mark Harmon’s dog, who bit a crew member. Pauley Perrette later said the dog was brought back to set even after the attack, this made her really scared and things got pretty tense. She claims she tried to speak up about it, but felt like her worries weren’t being taken seriously and that she was in an unsafe environment.
From there, things got worse. Reports suggest Pauley and Mark began filming scenes separately, and by her final season, they no longer appeared on camera together. She alluded to “a machine keeping me silent” and posted cryptic tweets about bullying, betrayal, and staying quiet “to protect the crew.”
Life After NCIS: Public Statements and Personal Pain
After leaving NCIS, Pauley Perrette made headlines again—this time for walking away from acting altogether. In 2020, she announced she had “retired,” writing:
“I’m finally (after over 4 decades!!!) not under contract to a studio. I’ve retired.”
“I’m free!!! (To be the slightly nutty, ‘no makeup’ cat lady I am!)”
In interviews and social media posts, she shared the deep emotional impact that Hollywood had on her life. Perrette opened up about her experiences of past trauma, including a violent assault with a homeless man outside her home and a distressing situation with an ex-boyfriend that left her both both physically and emotionally affected.
Faith, Recovery, and Finding Peace
Despite her hardships, Perrette has found strength in faith and her love for animals. She’s used her platform to speak about mental health, domestic abuse, and LGBTQ+ rights. While she remains largely out of the spotlight today, she continues to post updates about her life—often surrounded by her rescue dogs, embracing her role as a self-described “cat lady,” and showing glimpses of healing.
She also survived a major health scare—a stroke in 2021. In a heartfelt video the following year, she shared:
“Yes, I’m still here. I almost died, but I’m still here.”
Fans Still Miss Her—and Wonder
To this day, fans mourn Abby’s absence on NCIS and still hope for some kind of return. But it’s clear Pauley has moved on, and that Hollywood may never be a place she returns to. Her story is a reminder that fame can come with shadows—and that even the brightest stars can carry pain no one sees.
