Good Morning Britain host Charlotte Hawkins issued a breaking news alert on this morning’s instalment of the ITV show, in a major update for the Labour Party. Hawkins revealed the Minister of Justice David Lammy has announced new rules to help protect rape victims.

She said the measures are set to make it easier for victims to keep their sexual history private, along with any other previous allegations of rape they have made. Hawkins explained: “The Minister of Justice David Lammy has announced new rules to protect rape victims during the trial process.”

She added: “David Lammy has issued a statement saying, “Far too many victims of rape are dropping out of the system because they feel that they are the ones on trial. This has enabled vile rapists to evade the punishment they deserve for far too long.

“This must stop. We must rebalance the justice system to serve victims first and foremost, and that starts with the crucial reforms we’re bringing forward today.”

The reforms come as part of wider changes to the justice system. Lammy announced just yesterday that jury trials for sentences of less than three years are set to be scrapped.

He said in a statement yesterday: “This is not acceptable. Today I have set out a bold blueprint for a modern justice system that works for – not against – victims – one that is faster, fairer and finally capable of giving brave survivors of crime the justice they deserve.

“These reforms are bold and it will take time to turn the tide on the rising backlog, but these measures are necessary to tackle the emergency in our courts.

“We are putting victims before tradition for tradition’s sake and fairness before those who want to game the system.”
