Sir Richard Alston, one of the most influential figures in British contemporary dance, has passed away at the age of 77, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across the dance world.
The celebrated choreographer passed away peacefully at his home on September 7 following a period of ill health. He had received treatment at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, London, and was supported by close friends during his final weeks.
News of his passing was announced through his official Instagram page in an emotional statement honoring both his remarkable career and the personality behind it.
“It is with deep sadness that we have to report the death of Sir Richard Alston,” the statement read.
“After a period of ill-health, and despite exceptional treatment at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead and the support of his closest friends, he passed away peacefully at his home on 7th September.”
The tribute added that while Alston would be remembered for his “extraordinary career and contribution to contemporary dance,” those closest to him would also remember his “wit, warmth, and generosity of spirit.”
A Career That Spanned More Than Five Decades
Alston’s influence stretched across generations of dancers and choreographers.
He was widely known for his choreography work with The Place and London Contemporary Dance School and later established the Richard Alston Dance Company.
Across a career lasting more than 50 years, he created more than 200 dances.
His work also reached television audiences through the BBC. Alston appeared in the broadcaster’s 1994 documentary 40 Years of Dance, while in 2002 the BBC commissioned him to choreograph excerpts from The Rite of Spring for its Masterworks series.
His acclaimed dance company was disbanded six years before his passing after decades of producing contemporary and cutting-edge work.
At the time, Alston made it clear that he wanted the company to finish while it was still performing at its highest level.
Quoting T.S. Eliot, he told Ox in a Box: “I wanted to go out with a bang, not a whimper.”
“And that’s exactly what we are doing,” he continued. “I’m very, very proud of the pieces and the company as a whole. It’s as good as it’s ever been, and that’s the right way to go.”
Tributes Remember His Kindness and Influence
Following news of his passing, figures from the dance community shared memories of an artist whose impact extended far beyond the stage.
Laura Nicholson, Interim Chief Executive and Head of Children and Young People’s Dance, highlighted the respect Alston showed toward younger artists.
“Sir Richard took young people’s ideas seriously,” she said. “To him, they were not students to be corrected, but artists in development whose work deserved thorough thought and attention.”
Nicholson also remembered his generosity, kindness and genuine interest in the young people he encountered, saying those qualities had left a lasting impression.
Dance artist Akram Khan also paid tribute, recalling how he had looked up to Alston while finding his own path in contemporary dance.
“I am saddened to hear of Richard Alston’s passing,” Khan wrote on Facebook.
He described Alston as “a pioneer of the form” who nevertheless approached others with kindness and encouragement.
Khan said Alston helped define the world of contemporary dance that he first encountered as a student and stressed the importance of ensuring that the legacy of leading figures from that generation continues to inspire those who follow.
That legacy will also continue through the Richard Alston Foundation, which said its work would ensure the choreographer’s contribution can inspire future generations.
For those who worked with him, however, Alston leaves behind more than an extraordinary body of work. The tributes following his passing have repeatedly returned to the same qualities: his warmth, generosity and lifelong commitment to helping contemporary dance, and the people within it, flourish.
