Al Roker’s Controversial Comments on The Golden Bachelor Divorce
The world of morning television is no stranger to strong opinions, and Al Roker proved that once again with his sharp-tongued reaction to Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist’s divorce. After the couple, who starred in The Golden Bachelor, announced their split just three months after tying the knot, Roker wasted no time in making a joke out of the situation.
During a segment on Today, cohost Carson Daly broke the news to viewers, calling it “breaking news.” While Daly expressed some level of surprise, Roker, on the other hand, was quick to throw in a quip.
“What? Who would have seen that coming?” Roker sarcastically remarked. His humor didn’t stop there. He followed up with an even sharper jab: “It just goes to show that old people could be just as stupid.”
While some found Roker’s remarks amusing, others felt he was being insensitive, especially considering the emotional weight of a publicized breakup. His cohost, Daly, laughed uncomfortably and responded, “Well, you said it, Al. So poignant on the heels of a breakup. Thanks, Uncle Al.”

The View Hosts React to Roker’s Jokes
Meanwhile, over on The View, the reaction to Roker’s comments was mixed. Longtime host Sunny Hostin, a devoted fan of The Golden Bachelor, expressed her disappointment not only in the couple’s breakup but also in Roker’s harsh response.
“I fell for this nonsense,” Hostin admitted. “I thought since they were older, they knew better and they could find love. And they didn’t. And now Al Roker is out here making jokes about it?”
Cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin took a more analytical approach, stating that reality TV romance was never about “lasting love” but more about whether “the social experiment works.”
Ana Navarro, on the other hand, had no sympathy for the former couple. Instead, she seized the moment to say, “I told you so.”
“For six months, you tortured me every Friday and made me talk about this topic, which I can’t stand because I think it’s manufactured and a complete crock,” Navarro said, referencing the show’s weekly Golden Bachelor discussions. “So today, I get to say, ‘I told you so, I told you so, I told you so.’”
Sara Haines, another cohost, weighed in, saying she believed the couple’s biggest mistake was rushing into marriage. Navarro disagreed, arguing that the real mistake was “going on national TV to try to feign a relationship and love.”
Adding her signature comedic touch, Joy Behar joked, “She has money, he has Viagra. They’ll be fine.”

Why Did Al Roker Go Too Far?
While Roker is known for his blunt humor, many felt that he crossed a line with his “old people” comment. Some viewers and media personalities argued that while celebrity breakups are often the subject of jokes, there is a difference between lighthearted teasing and outright ridicule.
Additionally, given that both Turner and Nist had publicly shared their struggles with blending their families and finding a home together, some critics believed that Roker’s remarks minimized the genuine emotional toll of their split.
On social media, reactions to Roker’s comments were split. Some defended his humor, calling it “classic Al” and arguing that The Golden Bachelor was fair game for jokes. Others, however, felt he should have shown more sensitivity, especially given that the couple had previously been praised for inspiring hope in older adults looking for love.

Should Al Roker Apologize?
As the dust settles on this controversy, the question remains—did Al Roker truly go too far, and should he apologize for his remarks? While some believe his humor is simply part of his personality, others argue that he should acknowledge the impact of his words.
Regardless of where you stand, one thing is certain: reality TV romance will always be a hot topic, and morning show hosts will continue to weigh in with their takes. As for Roker, only time will tell if he chooses to address the backlash or simply let the moment pass.
