After three years on our screens, Emmerdale actress Martelle Edinborough has said goodbye to the ITV soap after her character Suzy Merton sadly died in the dramatic limo cr@sh
Emmerdale actress Martelle Edinborough, who viewers will recognise as Suzy Merton, is embarking on a new chapter after saying goodbye to the ITV soap.
Martelle joined the cast of Emmerdale back in 2022 where she appeared as event planner Suzy. Sadly after three years on our screens, the actress is moving to pastures new following the d3ath of her character.
During recent scenes, fans will have seen Suzy join other villagers as they headed on a night out in a limo. However, things took a dramatic turn when the limo they were travelling in was involved in a cr@sh, causing Suzy to hit her head on the roof – something which, sadly, proved fatal.
Following the tragic d3ath of her character, Martelle shared a post on X in which she paid tribute to the beloved show. “And just like that….Suzy is no more and a new chapter begins!! What an ep!,” she wrote. “It’s been such a blessing to have been a part of such an iconic show that I grew up on and loved by so many!! #Journeys.”

Ahead of her first scenes being aired, the Yorkshire-based soap star opened up about her excitement at working on the show. As she reflected on the opportunity, Martelle explained how the gig was a “dream” come true.
“I literally dropped to my knees and let out a few expletives, as you do. I was absolutely over the moon and overjoyed. What actor from Yorkshire doesn’t want to work on Emmerdale?,” she said at the time, reports the Express.
“I think it’s one of those dream jobs. I am from Yorkshire and I live in Leeds and it’s just on my doorstep, it’s perfect! My feet haven’t quite touched the ground yet, I’m still on this massive cloud high up in the sky, but it’s been going really, really good.
“It’s just like a family, and it sounds so cliché but it really is and everyone is so lovely and welcoming and helps you settle in really nicely.” Prior to joining Emmerdale, Martelle secured a string of other acting credits, including in the 2020 short The Tooth Fairy. She has also starred in shows including Cold Feet, Hollyoaks and Coronation Street.
Away from the screens, the actress has previously opened up about experiencing a subarachnoid haemorrhage in 2020. According to the NHS, a subarachnoid haemorrhage is an ‘uncommon’ type of stroke that can be fatal.
In 2023, she told fans she was recovering after undergoing surgery for the existing brain aneurysm. She wrote: “A few weeks ago I was told an existing brain aneurysm thought to always be tiny & stable had in fact always been of a size that needed treatment. Not sure where the error occurred for it to take so long to highlight this but despite the initial shock, I could only receive it as a blessing & refused to allow it manifest into fear, stress & anxiety.

“Yesterday, I had surgery where Dr’s were able to amazingly & successfully treat the aneurysm, placing a flow diverter in the artery to cut the off the blood supply to it, soon enabling it disappear for good!”
She added: “This is me post surgery. Peace signs at the readyyy! I can’t tell you how happy & blessed I felt/feel right now! Massive, MASSIVE thank you to all the incredible @NHSuk Dr’s, nurses & support staff, you are Amazing! & I am TRULY grateful to you all.”
Then in 2024, Martelle celebrated her “Life Day” as she marked four years since the health scare. In an Instagram post, she shared a snap from her time in hospital as she reflected on her recovery journey.
“Happy Life Day to Meee! 2/2/2020 Today marks 4 years since I suffered & survived a subarachnoid haemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm The survival rates of a ruptured aneurysm are pretty bleak & so every year I celebrate just how blessed & lucky I am to still be here,” she wrote.
“My journey back to self hasn’t been an easy one, suffering & 2nd SAH in 2021, getting diagnosed with a rare vascular disease as the root cause & undergoing preventive surgery last year to treat another aneurysm…BUT my arse still here…growing & glowing & so so GRATEFUL!!
“Here’s to more life, more love & more blessings #LifeDay #Blessed #Guided #Protected #Journeys #Growing #Glowing #Grateful.”
As Martelle embarks on a new journey post-Emmerdale, fans have already been giving her lots of support. “I actually thought the next ep might’ve showed that Liam had got it wrong, but obviously not! Gutted that you’ve left, Suzy was criminally underused, & I wish we were continuing her story! Onwards & upwards always, hope to see you onscreen again soon! Lotsa love to you.” wrote one.
“Nooooo…. I had wanted to see you and Mary get together. All the best wishes in your new chapter.. Suzy will be missed,” another added.
