Nationwide — Shakea Miller, who dropped out of college twice, is now celebrating having finally earned a degree in Business from the University of Phoenix in November 2024. Since then, she has been accepted into law school and has also been awarded with three honorary doctorate degrees. And all of this happened after she became one of the first African American woman to establish her very own degree-granting technical college in Alabama.

Shakea’s journey began with the founding of 1 on 1 Technical & Theological College in Phenix City, Alabama. This milestone places her as the sixth African American woman nationwide to establish such an institution. The college, which officially opened on June 24, 2024, offers a variety of degree programs and over 50 new certificate programs aimed at meeting the needs of a diverse and modern workforce.
Shakea comments, “By establishing this college, I hope to inspire the next generation of leaders and innovators. We are committed to cultivating an environment that not only educates but also empowers students to create positive change in their communities and beyond.”
Her dedication to education and her community is evident in her personal story of overcoming adversity. Having faced significant challenges, including becoming a teenage mother, she transformed her experiences into a source of strength and inspiration. Her leadership and commitment to educational equity have earned her numerous awards and accolades.
1 on 1 Technical & Theological College began enrolling students for the current academic year back in September 2024. Prospective students and the public are invited to tour the campus, meet with faculty, and explore the programs offered.
