BREAKING: Hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt PAUSE the show to deliver HEARTBREAKING NEWS from Portugal
BBC Breakfast fans issued the same complaint as they claimed to be “put off their breakfast”.
During Thursday’s (September 4) episode of the hit morning programme, hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt updated viewers on the latest news from across the UK and around the world.
They began the show by sharing devastating news from Portugal after 15 people l0st their lives in the derailment of the 140-year-old Gloria funicular, a major tourist attraction in the capital city of Lisbon.
Mike Bushell also presented the sports segment in the studio, while Matt Taylor delivered regular weather updates.
Elsewhere in the show, Naga and Charlie revealed that bladder and bowel charities have seen a rise in calls to their helplines from worried parents about problems with constipation in children.
“The number of children admitted to hospitals in England suffering with the condition is at a ten-year high, with more than 44,000 admissions last year,” Charlie said.
Naga then introduced a pre-recorded clip on the story, and issued a warning to viewers: “I should warn you, there are some images you might find upsetting, which show the distress which some children can experience.”
The hosts then spoke to Sian Wicks, chief executive of ERIC, The Children’s Bowel and Bladder Charity.
“It’s very difficult to deal with. At ERIC, we’re here to support families because quite often parents who ring our helpline don’t know that their child is constipated,” Sian explained.
She also opened up about the common “myths and misconceptions” about the condition.
After watching the segment, legions of BBC viewers took to social media to share their frustrations, with many complaining that the topic was being discussed too early in the morning.
“While I realise it’s an important subject… most of us are trying to eat our breakfast,” one person wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Another added: “Back to GMB, not the conversation I was expecting,” while a third said: “Hope no one’s eating.”
A fourth viewer echoed the sentiment, saying: “Nice subject while I’m eating, thanks,” with another similarly sharing: “Dear lord, I think I’ll skip breakfast now.”
