Larry David had to apologize to everyone’s favorite Sesame Street character.

On Thursday’s episode of the TODAY Show, Larry decided to go up to Elmo and squish his face and throw some jabs in the mix. TODAY Show host Al Rocker was starting to give the weather report when David walked out of his chair and went straight to Elmo, who was standing behind, Craig Melvin, Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie.

David grabbed Elmo’s face and threw some air swings, while the TODAY hosts were sitting in shock and shouting.

Elmo asked for Larry to come back to talk things out. Savannah looked at David, who was back in his seat across the studio, and said, “Larry, you’ve gone too far this time.” Larry responded, “Somebody had to do it.” What makes the situation even more shocking is the fact that Larry did this in front of Elmo’s father, Louie. Louie told Larry that he should have asked permission before touching others.

Later in the show, Larry ended up apologizing to Elmo and Louie, but only after being prompted to. Hoda told Larry to apologize “from the heart” and he joked asking, “From where? What organ are you talking about?” He continued: “Elmo, I just want to apologize.” Elmo accepted the apology, while Louie though it was “very big” of him to do that.

Elmo has been the talk of the week since they posted a tweet on X, formerly known as Twitter, checking in with its fans and asking, “How is everybody doing?” The Monday post received around 201.8 million views with 17,000 replies. Adults in the replies didn’t hold back as they vented their thoughts, feelings and emotions on the little creature.

One person wrote: “Elmo each day the abyss we stare into grows a unique horror. One that was previously unfathomable in nature. Our inevitable doom which once accelerated in years, or months, now accelerates in hours, even minutes.” People on the social media platform were even feeling bad at how much “trauma dump” Elmo received. Sesame Street also linked their mental health resources and wrote: “Mental health is health! For Emotional Wellbeing Resources and more, visit Sesame Workshop.”
