BBC Breakfast’s Carol Kirkwood delivered an urgent update to viewers on Monday. Storm Floris is hitting the UK bringing winds of up to 90mph. A yellow weather warning is in force for millions in the north of the country, with an amber alert fast approaching. In today’s broadcast, Carol, 63, began: “We are looking at Storm Floris crossing our shores. Wherever you are it’s going to be a wet and windy day. But the strongest gust of winds is going to be across northern and western Scotland. The Met Office has an amber weather warning and it kicks in at 10 o’clock this morning until 10 o’clock tonight.” With yellow and amber weather warnings in place commuters are expected to face significant travel disruption. It comes as Network Rail Scotland also warns that wind speeds are starting to pick up. The worst of it was hitting Scotland’s west coast, it says, where winds had already reached 78mph.

She went on: “We are looking at widespread gusts of wind from 60-70mph. Coasts, hills and bridges 80-90mph. You can probably expect some delays and disruptions and potentially some damage as well.” Pointing to the weather map, Carol continued, “This is Storm Floris here. It’s this deep area of low pressure. It comes in across the west coast of Scotland in the late morning and early afternoon and moves to the north east of Scotland as we head through the afternoon into the evening before clearing.”

She went on: “We also have a lot of rain associated with it and that has been falling steadily throughout the course of the night. So that combination could be quite treacherous in places.

The rain continues to push southwards through the day. We will all see all of that. And you can see how it wraps back around the north of Scotland.”

High winds could pose a danger to life across parts of the UK on Monday, the Met Office has warned, as it upgraded the threat rating of Storm Floris from yellow to amber for Scotland.

There are weather warnings in place across much of the UK, with amber warnings for most of Scotland.

Wind gusts of up to 50mph, external (80km/h) are expected across much of Northern Ireland, with winds of about 60mph (100km/h) or more forecast for the north coast and more exposed areas.

The storm is also expected to bring a spell of heavy and persistent rain, mainly through the first half of Monday before clearing.

Storm Floris is the first storm to hit Ireland and the UK since Storm Éowyn in January.

That storm sparked a rare red warning for Northern Ireland, and the first red warning for the whole island of Ireland.
