Craig Melvin unexpectedly became the centre of attention during a light-hearted moment on the TODAY show on May 2, when he found himself roped into the viral “I’m so hungry I could eat…” TikTok trend. The fun unfolded live on the Plaza, where Craig was joined by his co-hosts Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, and Carson Daly. As the team enjoyed their usual banter, Savannah suddenly began filming a TikTok video right then and there, catching Craig slightly off guard.
With her phone in hand, Savannah jokingly said, “I’m so hungry I could eat Leroy Doby,” referencing the trend in which people dramatically exaggerate their hunger. The moment sparked laughter among the hosts and crew, and quickly made its way to social media, where fans of the show appreciated the humorous spontaneity. It was another light, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the chemistry and camaraderie that keeps viewers tuning in to TODAY every morning.

“We played that game two days ago,” he responded before turning around to see Doby, his childhood friend, in the crowd.
“Are you kidding me?” Craig exclaimed, as he and Doby hugged.
“Well done,” he continued to Savannah, while briefly mentioning the trend, in which someone tells you they’re so hungry they could eat a random person from your past, with no context as to why that person is named. Craig then told everyone about his history with Doby.

“Leroy and I have been friends since we were in third grade,” Craig said. “He’s the godfather of my son (Delano). (He) served his country for 20 years. I don’t know why I’m getting all emotional. Thank you for being here.”
Doby showed up in person two days after Craig was pranked by TODAY social media video producer KC Cibran on April 30 in the “I’m so hungry I could eat” trend, in which Doby was named.
“Is Leroy here?” a confused Craig responded. “What game is this?”
That moment sparked something in Craig, according to Savannah, who told Leroy just how excited he was when he heard Doby’s name as part of that first prank.
“When Craig heard your name, his eyes lit up. We just were so touched by it. We were like, ‘We got to get Leroy here!’” she said on TODAY May 2.
Craig is the latest member of the TODAY family to be targeted as part of the trend. On April 24, Jenna Bush Hager’s assistant Julia Plant told Jenna she was so hungry she could eat Richard Gentry, who was Jenna’s prom date.

On May 1, Jenna got Carson on TODAY when she said, “I’m so hungry I could eat a Jennifer Love Hewitt,” referring to his former girlfriend, whom he dated back in his days hosting “TRL” on MTV.
“Thank you for doing what I was about to do,” Savannah said.
“Wait, what?” Carson said, while Savannah and Jenna exchanged a high-five.
